Shoulder injury making progress!

I’ve noticed a huge difference in how my shoulder feels over the past couple of weeks. I discontinued doing my daily pushups on February 18th, and that seems to have made a world of difference. As many of you already know, I (foolishly) continued to do pushups every day after I injured my shoulder. I continued doing the pushups because they didn’t seem to bother my shoulder (no pain while doing them), but now I’m… [Read more]

Time for a new digital camera.

Okay, it’s long past time for me to buy a new digital camera. The one I have now is a Fuji “FinePix 1400 Zoom”, and it has served me well for many years, but it’s also very dated – only 1 MegaPixel, no ability to shoot videos, limited manual control, and so on… It also has some stuck pixels, and the battery door keeps breaking (I’ve replaced it 3 times now). I’ve done quite a… [Read more]

Friday; Spring is almost here – yardwork and sun tans.

I’m so glad it’s Friday. It’s been “one of those weeks”, and I’m really looking forward to my weekly culinary indulgence – a little pizza and wine is really going to hit the spot tonight. This will probably be the last “free” weekend before Lisa and I will resume working in the yard every Sunday. It’s warming up here (not that it ever got all that cold), and it’s been raining for the past few… [Read more]

Pushing through pain; Upper body goals.

Cool, it’s leg day. I’ve always loved leg day, but now I especially look forward to it because it’s the one day every week that I still get to train with weights (thanks to my shoulder injury). My favorite time of the day on Thursday is right after my leg workout when my legs are shaking and I’m standing in front of the stove making my oatmeal & egg whites while drinking a protein shake… [Read more]

Running late.

I’m running really late this morning. I’ve got a lot of issues to deal with for work, and then I’ll be in meetings all day. 🙁 I’m going to go get my cardio while I can. Sorry for the short update! Have a great day, I’ll see you on the forum tonight.

The power to change: Meet Zef82.

I know there are some extremely overweight people who see my site and think to themselves, “John wasn’t really fat in his before picture – he doesn’t even know the meaning of the word fat! I can’t do what he did because I weigh 300/350/400+ pounds.” If you are one of those people, I’d like to introduce you to forum member “Zef82“. (Note: You must be a registered member of the forums to view this… [Read more]

How often should you weigh yourself?

A lot of people make the mistake of weighing themselves far too often once they become excited about losing weight. It’s natural to want to check your progress, but checking your weight more than once every day is extremely counter-productive and can be quite stressful. Weighing yourself once every week is best, but if you can’t wait that long (I obviously weigh myself daily), make sure you do it no more than once per day…. [Read more]

Handling setbacks.

As I suspected, I’ve lost 1/4″ from my arms and chest. Losing weight was easy compared to the frustration I’m feeling right now. I worked very hard for the muscle I managed to put on prior to my shoulder injury, so it’s not easy sitting around waiting for my shoulder to heal as my upper body muscles atrophy. I know today’s post is uncharacteristically negative, but there’s some value in that, and a lesson to… [Read more]

More on my shoulder; Why do you workout?

It’s amazing how much better my shoulder is feeling this morning compared to just a week ago. I think all the things I’ve been doing to help it heal are starting to work. For the longest time I continued to do pushups every day because I didn’t feel any pain when I was doing them, but earlier this week a few people on the forum set me straight about that and told me that I… [Read more]

Shoulder/upper body; All The Whey review thread; Friday!

I’m a little nervous about measuring my chest next week. It looks noticeably smaller to me, and I’m afraid all these months of being unable to work my upper body are beginning to show. I’m totally focused on healing my shoulder: of course I’m still not lifting, I’ve stopped doing my daily pushups, I’ve been doing my rotator cuff strengthening/rehabilitation exercises every single day and I’m making a conscience effort to not use my right… [Read more]
