How often should you weigh yourself?

A lot of people make the mistake of weighing themselves far too often once they become excited about losing weight. It’s natural to want to check your progress, but checking your weight more than once every day is extremely counter-productive and can be quite stressful. Weighing yourself once every week is best, but if you can’t wait that long (I obviously weigh myself daily), make sure you do it no more than once per day. Your weight is going to fluctuate quite a lot depending on how much fluid and food you have in you, and that’s why once a week is best for most people. To ensure consistent results, be sure that when you do weigh in it’s always at the same time and under the same conditions. I always weigh myself the very first thing in the morning in a fasted state, right after I go to the bathroom. If you do decide to weigh in every day, you’ve got to take into account that your weight can fluctuate several pounds from one day to the next. This is normal, so don’t get frustrated! Take a look at my weight charts, the plot points move all around from day to day – it takes weeks for real trends to show up. Most importantly, don’t just use the scale! It’s far better to measure yourself and look at your pictures and/or reflection in the mirror. Those things are much better indicators than the scale when it comes to checking your fat loss. Effective, permanent fat loss takes time. Be patient and the results will come.
