A few days ago I was feeling depressed and unsatisfied with my progress. I think lack of carbs was a major factor in why I was feeling this way. So, over the past two days I did clean refeeds. My body was hungering for quality carbs, and that’s what I gave it from foods such as oats, yams, bananas and grapefruit. I now feel back on top of things mentally, I feel strong and my muscles look much fuller.

Aside from the carbs, something else that really helped me get re-focused was to sit down and take stock of what I’ve accomplished over the past five months. Considering where I was on January 1, 2007 – 236 pounds/19% body fat – I’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. I’ve been working my butt off over the past few months, and I’ve made excellent progress. I’ve dropped over 40 pounds and reduced my body fat to below 8%. Yeah, I still have a couple of muscle groups that I’m not satisfied with, and I admit that I’m frustrated by last bit of fat just bellow my belly button, but I’m doing everything in my power to correct those things and that’s all I can do.

I barely recognize myself from this past January. When I looked at my January 2007 picture yesterday for the first time in about a month, I was shocked all over again! Man, no two ways about it – I got FAT over my 2006 bulking phase!

January 1, 2007: 236 pounds, 19% body fat

January 1, 2007: 236 pounds, 19% body fat

June 1, 2007: 195.8 Pounds, 7.4% body fat

June 1, 2007: 195.8 Pounds, 7.4% body fat

I also went back and compared my pictures from previous summers, and I’m very happy with the improvements I’ve made. Looking at these pictures made me feel very good about my accomplishments; they really put things in perspective. All my muscle groups have improved, and so has my overall symmetry. I’m especially pleased with the changes I made over this past year to my upper body width, my delts, my lats and my legs.

Someone wrote to me recently and said the following:

“It seems to me that today you are only a hair ‘better’ (bigger, leaner, however you want to put it) than you were 2 years ago despite 2 cycles of large weight swings. It looks like you’ve been spinning the proverbial wheels…

This person (who, by the way, I don’t know and have absolutely nothing against) then went on to run some numbers to support his point. These numbers were based purely on my body weights and (perhaps suspect) body fat measurements. I encouraged him to not pay so much attention to the numbers, but to instead judge my progress based on my actual physique.

Look at my picture from two years ago and compare it to today’s photo: do you think I have I been “spinning my wheels”? Believe me, I’m my own worst critic, and I sure don’t think so! I think my physique today is in a completely different class than it was two years ago.

Summer Progress Comparison

Summer Progress Comparison

Note: I had to use July 1st pictures for 2005 and 2006 because I was on vacation June 1st those years and did not take my usual monthly photo.

I’ve decided to cut through the end of June, so my July 1st picture should be my best ever. But that’s nothing: this next year I’m going to work very hard on my traps, my chest and my rear delts. I’m also going to make sure I don’t put on so much fat over my next bulk, and do everything I can to get my mid-section even tighter. Next June’s picture is going to blow all these pictures out of the water!
