This morning most of my body is aching from Sunday’s mountain biking accident. I guess the impact of the fall affected me a lot more than I originally realized. The entire left side of my body, especially around my ribs and hip, is very sore, and my right wrist feels like I might have sustained a mild sprain.

Yesterday the pain and swelling around and in my mouth got pretty bad, and so I had to swallow some of the pain meds that the emergency room physician prescribed to me. Even with the meds, the pain and swelling left me unable to open my mouth more than a centimeter or two, and so eating and talking was very painful. I tried to eat solid food, but it didn’t really work out. I wound up drinking 4 out of 5 of my meals yesterday.

Needless to say I was feeling pretty woozy and weak yesterday afternoon when I headed into the gym to do my leg workout. Unfortunately once I began to lift the wound on the inside of my mouth started to bleed almost immediately. I tried to continue with the workout, but the bleeding became worse and began to affect my ability to breathe mid-set. I’m sorry to say that had to cut the workout short.

I posted a new picture from yesterday morning in my journal. Believe it or not the swelling actually got worse as the day went on.

Now for some good news! This morning the swelling is down a bit, I didn’t bleed at all last night and I can open my mouth a bit wider than I could yesterday. I’m pretty sure the worst of the pain is behind me now. The stitches come out on Friday.

A bit more good news: thanks to some excellent home brew software that I was fortunate to come across, I have successfully recovered all the lost video footage from the wreck and the ride back to the car. The video is a bit glitchy in spots and the audio was not recoverable (most unfortunate), but I’m very happy to have the footage back. The wreck itself, at least from the perspective of the helmet camera, was not at all impressive. Lisa’s reaction to seeing my face, however, is absolutely priceless. Again, I feel horrible about what Lisa went through (if this had happened to her I can’t even imagine how I would have reacted… I feel sick just thinking about it), but at least now we can “laugh” about it. Because there’s no audio I think I’m going to narrate the footage when I can speak intelligibly again. I may give it a try tonight or tomorrow.

So today is a cardio-only day, and I’m going to do some LISS cardio this morning before breakfast. Tomorrow’s workout is up in the air, as my hurt wrist may prove to be a real problem. We’ll see.

I took a sick day yesterday, but today I’m back on the job. I’ve got some catching up to do, so I’d better get my cardio in and get to work. Thanks very much for all the support, kind words and stories of your own crazy sports injuries!
