Week #4 of my 2010 cut is over; A surprising weekly progress report!

I’ve now completed 4 weeks of my 2010 cut! My plan at the beginning of this cut was to go back to what I do best when I’m chasing a goal: all or nothing. Over the past four weeks I’ve not had so much as a single taste of “junk” food or alcohol, I’ve been getting plenty of rest and, despite my injuries from last Sunday’s bike accident, I’ve remained upbeat and positive. I decided to skip one workout last week, but apart from that I’ve not missed any workouts or cardio sessions. I skipped Friday’s training session because my body was struggling to recover from my injuries, and I felt skipping the workout was the smart thing to do. It was not a decision I came to lightly, and I feel it was the right choice.

So, it’s Sunday and time for me to evaluate my progress over the past week. This past week has been very unusual in a lot of ways. Because of the injuries I sustained in and around my mouth last Sunday, eating and drinking has been very painful and difficult; as a result, my daily caloric intake last week was quite low. Last Sunday (the day of the accident) I spent half the day in the emergency room and my total calories for that day were only a little over 1,000. The rest of the week was not much better: my daily caloric intake ranged from a low of around 1,300 calories to a high of around 1,800 calories. In light of this, I fully expected to see some lean mass loss this week. The results of this morning’s measurements are very surprising…

My scale weight this morning is 197.4 pounds, which means I’ve lost 1.6 pounds over the past week, and a total of 9 pounds since the start of my cut.

My body fat reading this morning is 13.2% (as measured by the Fat Track PRO Digital Body Fat Calipers). That’s a .7% drop from last week’s reading of 13.9%, and a 2.3% drop from my 2010 cut starting body fat percentage of 15.5%. Here’s the surprising part of this week’s measurements: over the past week I’ve lost 1.6 pounds of fat and 0 pounds of lean mass! I’m astonished by this, but after taking the body fat measurement three times I’m convinced the reading is accurate. My total losses since the start of my cut are 5.93 pounds of fat, and 3.07 pounds of lean mass. Let’s check my tape measurements and see if they back up my body fat reading…

My tape measurements (as measured by the MyoTape) are as follows: this past week I lost an additional half-inch from my waist, another quarter-inch from my hips, another half-inch from my thighs and a quarter-inch from my chest. All the rest of my measurements were the same. My 2010 cut total measurement changes now come to a total of 2 inches off my waist, 1.25 inch from my hips, 1 inch from my thighs and a half-inch from my chest. Pretty darn good!

I’m very pleased with the progress I made during the first 4 weeks of my cut! I expect to lose another 7 or 8 pounds of fat over the next four weeks, and that is going to put me in the neighborhood of 10% body fat. Cutting from 10% to 8% body fat (my goal) will likely take another 4 weeks or so, so I expect to reach my goal around April 1st. Amazing what can be accomplished with just 12 weeks of hard work and dedication, isn’t it?
