Bad day at work fuels awesome workout!

Yesterday was a long, stressful and downright irritating work day. Unfortunately, thanks to cutbacks, part of my job now involves taking tech support calls from college students. Approximately 80% of the students I have the displeasure of speaking with constantly mumble, can’t express a coherent thought and can not properly construct even the occasional complete sentence. I’m totally serious. I had to keep reminding myself that I was speaking with college students, and not stoned… [Read more]

Yesterday’s cardio; JSF BodyShop™ closed beta staus update.

I’m really glad I decided to do LISS cardio yesterday; even riding at relatively low speeds (~15 MPH) my legs felt like logs. I wound up doing a 45-minute session, 11.1 miles, 141 BPM average heart rate. My legs and glutes are pretty sore this morning from Monday’s killer 320-rep leg workout, but not nearly as sore as they were the first week of my cut. While I don’t mind being sore, it is nice… [Read more]

Best workout so far this month; Keep the BodyShop feedback coming!

Yesterday marked the beginning of week #3 of my 2010 cut, and also the start of another week of “intensity” workouts. The intensity workouts I’ve been doing on this cut are extremely demanding and very high volume, but I really enjoy them. I always feel like I’m in my element when I’m doing high volume, fast paced training. I guess I enjoy the challenge. Yesterday was leg day, and my workout was the crazy 320… [Read more]

Closing out week #2 of my cut: detailed weekly progress report.

Today marks the final day of week #2 in my 2010 cut, and that means it’s time for my weekly progress report. Remember, every Sunday while I’m on my cut I’ll take a complete set of tape measurements, a 7-point body fat caliper reading and my scale weight. Using that data, I’ll evaluate my progress and make any adjustments to my diet and training that I feel are necessary. If you are trying to cut… [Read more]

Busy weekend ahead; New dog?; Yesterday’s “core” back and biceps workout.

This weekend I’m going to be very, very busy. This morning Lisa and I are grocery shopping and house cleaning, and I’ve also got a couple of meetings lined up. Yesterday’s cardio; BIG BodyShop™ update; AtLarge 15% off sale!

Yesterday was a cardio only day, and I decided to do another LISS session on the recumbent bike. It was a 45-minute workout and I did 11.4 miles with an average heart rate of 153 BPM. I felt fantastic the entire ride, and really enjoyed it. I’m not sure why I’ve been doing so much LISS cardio lately, but that’s what I’ve been in the mood for. I will definitely be doing some HIIT this… [Read more]

Yesterday’s “core” chest/delts/triceps workout; JSF BodyShop™ news!

Yesterday was my “core” (strength building) chest, triceps and delts workout. It was a slow and very heavy training session. These core workouts only involve 1 or 2 exercises per muscle group, but with the extensive warm-up and acclimation sets combined with the fairly long rest intervals (2-3 minutes), they are not exactly brief workouts. Here’s what I came up with: CHEST 3 x 4-6 Barbell bench press (+ 5 warmup/acclimation sets: 1×20, 1×10, 1×6,… [Read more]

Which is best, HIIT or LISS cardio; Which cardio machine is best?

Yesterday was a cardio-only day. I knew I was going to have a very busy afternoon, so I decided to do 45-minutes of fasted LISS (Low Intensity, Steady State) cardio on my recumbent bike. I did 11.2 miles and my average heart rate was 144 BPM. I always see posts on the forum asking questions about cardio. The two questions I see the most are “Which type of cardio is best, HIIT (High Intensity Interval… [Read more]

Sodium, water weight and the scale; How often should you weigh yourself?

Yesterday I received an email in which I was asked the following question: “If you were so bloated before your cut started, why did you only lose 1.68 pounds of water last week?” That’s an excellent question. Scale weight fluctuations, water weight and sodium are subjects that a lot of people wonder about. Today I’d like to talk about these things, and that should help answer the reader’s question. Lots of people who are trying… [Read more]
