Cardio dogma; The war rages: muscle loss tweaks my ego; April “100 Challenge”.

Yesterday I decided to go ahead with a fasted 45-minute LISS cardio session, and had a great ride. I received an email yesterday that basically said, “I thought you liked HIIT cardio? Why are you doing LISS?” I do like HIIT cardio. In fact, I love it. But I have never understood the fierce debates that often take place arguing that one type of cardio or the other (usually HIIT or LISS) is “the best”…. [Read more]

Negativity, depression, anxiety? Here’s my take & how I took charge of my health.

The stormy weather we were experiencing in my neck of the woods yesterday morning gave way to bright, sunny skies just in time for my leg workout! I was able to take part of my workout outdoors after all, and I really enjoyed it. Every workout since my week off from training has been outstanding. Good workouts always put me in a terrific mood, and so it’s no surprise that I’m feeling especially positive and… [Read more]

Rain prevents my planned outdoor leg workout; Down the home stretch to 8%.

It’s a nasty, rainy day here in Central Florida. What a shame, because yesterday while planning today’s leg workout I decided that I was going to take part of it outdoors for some backyard lunges. Oh well. Maybe next week. I am now entering week 13 of my cut and, as of yesterday, I’ve reached 10.1% body fat. The final four weeks (est) of my cut will also be the most challenging. Cutting from 10%… [Read more]

Sunday progress report: Week #12 complete, very surprising results!

Week #12 of my 2010 cut is now complete, and I’ve recorded some rather unexpected results for this week. Let’s take a look! My scale weight this morning is 188.6 pounds, which means I actually gained .4 pounds over the past week. That means I’ve now lost a total of 17.8 pounds since the start of my cut. Of course scale weight alone is meaningless, so let’s take a look at the rest of the… [Read more]

Feeling incredible; Having trouble getting in shape? I have some advice.

I woke up this morning at 6:00 AM sharp feeling absolutely fantastic! Well, technically speaking Loki woke me up at 6:00 AM sharp with a barrage of kisses, but that’s a pretty good way to start the day in my book. I grabbed that old boy and wrestled with him for a minute or two, trying not to wake Lisa. It’s hard to believe Loki is 15 years old. He still thinks he’s a puppy,… [Read more]

Despite lower back pain, excellent week of workouts; Weekend plans.

This has been a very busy and productive week for me. There’s lots going on at work, but I’ve been right on target with my diet and my training has gone extremely well. My legs were not quite as sore as I expected them to be, but my chest and triceps are absolutely destroyed from Wednesday’s awesome workout. Today is my final weight training workout of the week, back and biceps. Because my lower back… [Read more]

Supersets, Giant sets, Drop sets; What’s wrong with my lip?

I had another excellent workout (pecs/delts/triceps) yesterday afternoon. I think that week off did far more for me than just allow those couple minor injuries to heal; I feel completely recharged – both mentally and physically. I find myself looking forward to my workouts, and my intensity in the gym is noticeably higher than it’s been in recent weeks. It’s become increasingly rare for me to simply do “standard” sets. Lately for my intensity workouts… [Read more]

All about HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) cardio.

I changed my mind yesterday and decided to do an afternoon session of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) instead of morning LISS (Low Intensity Steady-State) cardio. I am a big fan of HIIT cardio, for several reasons. First, I like that the sessions are relatively brief at just 12-20 minutes compared to 45-60 minutes for LISS. Also, if you want to improve your cardio-vascular abilities and VO2 max, HIIT is one of the most powerful… [Read more]

Yesterday’s workout; High sodium meal, poor sleep; Mulch project this weekend.

Yesterday’s leg workout was awesome! After taking a week off I was dying to start lifting again, and I really tore into my workout. As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog entry, I decided to switch from squats to leg press so that my lower back can fully recover from the strain. While the leg press is a good exercise, it just isn’t the same as squats. As soon as I’m able I’m going to go… [Read more]

Back to training this week; My current goals, and why I’m cutting to 8%.

After a week off from training, I can’t wait to get in the gym this afternoon and destroy my legs! Aside from a small amount of pain in my lower back, all the other minor injuries are gone. As I mentioned yesterday, I am going to avoid squats for another week or so that my back can fully recover. I have a great leg press system which allows me to choose between two different angles… [Read more]
