Deads felt great!; What’s this project I’ve been working on?

Awesome workout (back/biceps/traps) yesterday! My wrist is still feeling tip-top, and I was surprised at how much I was able to pull after almost a month off. I’ve definitely lost some strength, but I have no doubt that with a month or so of hard work I’ll get back to where I was.

Yesterday I finally completed the big project I’ve been working on for the past few weeks. I feel really good about the work I’ve done, and on Monday I’m going to deploy everything. Next week will be very busy, as even under the best of circumstance there are always numerous minor issues and problems when making massive changes like this.

I know a lot of you work in IT, and a few of you asked me what this project I’ve been working on is. Basically I’ve re-created from the ground up the servers that make up my company’s core network. Some of the existing servers were very old – in a couple of cases still running version 3 of Slackware Linux. Yeah. Anyway, the work involved fresh installs of modern O/Ss (I went with Debian Lenny for most of them), setting up and configuring the services, securing the machines, migrating all the existing data over to the new systems (this was pretty challenging) and, in some cases, code had to be re-written to work properly on the new systems. The servers involved included the primary DNS server, the primary POP3/SMTP/IMAP servers, the primary commercial web host servers, a proprietary database server (this one was a nightmare) and a data collection server (MRTG/PRTG/What’s Up/SNMP/etc). Everything is now running on brand new hardware and virtualized using VMware. This morning I woke up thinking about the old secondary DNS server, and it was bugging me. So I decided to grab another server and had a net install of Lenny going before I even had my first cup of coffee. The secondary DNS server is pretty straight-forward, and I had it done before I finished that first cup. Now I can relax and think about all the things that could go wrong on Monday. 😆

I’m going to get away from the computer and go for a nice long bike ride. Hope you guys have a great Saturday!
