Lisa cooked last night!; Today’s workout; Bulking alternative I’m considering.

Lisa surprised me yesterday when she announced that she was cooking dinner for us. It was a splurge meal, but we were due for one. She prepared a delicious crab quiche that was out of this world! For someone who rarely cooks, Lisa has quickly found her chef legs. I still have to compile the nutrition facts and enter the meal into my BodyShop food logs, and I’m almost scared to: each serving had 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese, 1/2 cup of heavy cream, bacon and, of course, pie crust. It also had scallions, whole eggs and fresh dill. The meal was well worth the extra calories, and a nice change from my usual stable of cheat meals.

Today is leg day, and I’m going to do the same high volume 320-rep workout that I did last week:

3 x 20 – Leg extensions
3 x 20 – Lying leg curls
3 x 20 – Squats
3 x 20 – Dumbbell lunges
4 x 20 – Standing smith machine calf raises

Strict rest intervals of 1-minute between sets, 2 minutes between exercises. I still feel slightly sick thinking about when I did this workout for the first time last week. Forcing myself to do the lunges after the squats was a real test of willpower. This week I’ll be upping the weight, too. I’ll probably do this workout for a couple more weeks and then change the exercises up, reduce the volume somewhat and increase the weights.

I’ve been continuing to consider whether or not I want to do an all-out bulk this fall/winter. Now that I’ve stopped drinking and am 100% focused my diet and training, it seems like this would be a good time to try something I’ve never really done before: embark on a slow, steady muscle building program. This would involve nothing more than a slight change in my diet: increase calories slightly over maintenance. The gains I’ll make will be far from dramatic as compared to a full-on bulking program, but I should be able to make slow, steady mass gains while keeping my body fat gains to a bare minimum. I’m seriously thinking about doing this starting at the beginning of August.

Well, this weekend sure seemed to fly by. Time to get back to work – hope your day is a good one!
