Pond - Sod Removed

Yesterday’s cardio, excavating my new backyard pond, turned out to be a huge project! I made excellent progress and got almost all of the thick, well-rooted sod up before a storm came rolling in. I’m glad the storm came along, because I was pretty wiped out from hours of digging (plus I mowed the lawn before starting on the project).

The pond size is approximately 8 feet by 10 feet. It will be up to three feet deep.

Today I’ll complete the digging. The nearest area of the pond will be a beach area with a very shallow decline to allow the toads easy access and exit. The pond will have one or two drops in depth; the deepest section will at the far corner – around 3 feet deep. There will be a rocky waterfall above the deep end. Large flat rocks, palms and tropical plants will line most of the pond. I’m also going to shape a plant shelf around 10″ below the surface of the water to hold lots of water-loving plants. There will be a stone pathway from the beach shallow area over to the patio and a small overflow channel filled with pea gravel.

I’m really excited about this project! I’m can’t wait to enjoy the relaxing sound of the waterfall along with the soft chirping of all my toad friends. For now, though, I’ve got a lot of hard, sweaty work to do. I’m going to get to it before it gets too hot!
