Listening to your body; Interesting “functional workout” planned for this weekend.

Despite feeling beat up from two straight days of backbreaking work on my pond project, my plan yesterday was to proceed with my usual leg workout. Something that I strongly believe, but sometimes stubbornly ignore (often with disastrous results), is that you should always listen to what your body is telling you. Yesterday my entire body was screaming, “DUDE, I NEED A BREAK!” My workouts over the past month have been outstanding, and I really wanted to train, but ultimately I decided that I really did need a day off to recover. There’s a big difference between blowing off a workout because you “don’t feel like it” and consciously deciding to skip one for a very good reason. I know that skipping yesterday’s workout was the right thing to do. This morning I’m feeling 100% more rested and recharged, so I’m going to go ahead and make up yesterday’s leg workout today. I’ll bet I have a much better workout today than I would have had yesterday.

It looks like this weekend is going to be another labor-intensive couple of days. All the equipment for the pond (skimmer, pump, waterfall, electrical components, lights, liner, underlayment and so on) should be here by Friday. My hope is to have the pond up and running on Saturday. Then there’s the matter of the stones, rocks and boulders. I found a local quarry that should have every thing we need, but moving everything into place is going to be a real chore. I estimate that we’re going to need between 20-30 tons of rocks and stones (ranging in size from large bolders all the way down to pea gravel) to complete the pond and walkway. I’m going to have to move every ounce of that material from the driveway to the backyard and then place everything by hand. Talk about a good workout! I may skip my back and biceps workout on Friday so my muscles are fresh. I have a feeling my “functional workout” over the weekend is going to be far more challenging than anything I might have done in my gym!
