My back is pretty sunburned, and it really hurts. I put sun block on while I was outside working, but it looks like I didn’t do it soon enough. Normally I can tolerate lots of sun without burning, but it’s been about a month since I’ve spent any significant amount of time outside with my shirt off, so my back didn’t have its usual base tan. Stupid me!

Loki is still doing good – no further episodes since the night before last. I’m so relieved that he seems to be OK. Thanks everyone for your concern. 🙂

The heat has been unreal this past week. I’ve literally picked the hottest time of the year to take on installing a pond from scratch. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I started. If I’d known how much work it was going to be I definitely would have waited until early spring to do it. It’s just miserable outside right now.

I was just looking at my vacation time, and it reset at the beginning of August. I still had 10 unused vacation days from last year, which rolled over. So now I’ve got something like 31 vacation days, 10 sick days (I haven’t taken a sick day in like 3 years) and a couple of personal days. I’m going to take today and tomorrow off to complete Phase II of the pond.

We got a lot of work done yesterday, and finally filled the pond! Here are a few new pictures and a video…

The first thing we did yesterday was get the very heavy 45mm pond liner installed:

Here the pond is nearly filled and the falls are running:

I also started working on the pond’s shallow beach area. This is not the final design – I simply wanted to get some rocks in place and provide a nice area for the toads to sit in the water last night. Many more rocks will be added and rearranged over the next couple of days, and all the excess liner will be cut away/hidden. Plants will be added in Phase III. I’m happy with how it’s coming along, but there’s lots more to do.

Short video of the falls running:

Unfortunately, despite my regular use of a level during the grading, the eastern bank of the pond is about 2 inches higher than the rest of the pond. So I’ve got to lower that side a bit. I also need to raise the skimmer about 5 inches, which is going to be a real pain (the pond must be partially drained). This was my very first attempt at building a pond, so I guess mistakes are going to happen no matter how much planning I do. Thankfully I can correct these errors. The extra effort will be worth it. I’m very much looking forward to finishing this project up. The sound of the water is so relaxing that I know I’m going to spend a lot of time out there enjoying it. The toads are already loving it: we’ve now got four very happy toads out back!
