I'm stupid

I'm stupid

Yesterday while working on the pond I did something really stupid. I’ve had my share of minor injuries over the course of this project (three smashed toes, two smashed fingers, bruises, scrapes and cuts) but this one really hurts: I burned the tips of all my fingers. I’ve been wearing gloves through the entire project, but my gloves developed some tears and had to be thrown out early yesterday. Like an idiot, I continued to work. As the sun got hotter so did all the rock and the black rubber pond liner. I’m pretty sure you could fry an egg on either of those surface in the heat of the day, and that’s no exaggeration. Anyway, I kept forgetting to wet the rock and pond liner down before attempting to handle them, and repeatedly touching them with my bare hands caused burns. I didn’t realize how bad it was until later in the day. My finger tips all look like this now, and are so tender that even typing hurts:

I know, I’m an idiot. I guess I won’t be playing much guitar for the next week or so. Moving on…

End of day August 17, 2010

End of day August 17, 2010

We got a lot done yesterday. We started off the day tinkering with the waterfall rock placement. We liked what we had done the day prior, but we thought that once we have the rocks high enough to obscure the waterfall weir it would have looked too narrow. So we horizontally expanded the size of the waterfall; in the process of doing that we wound up doing the entire waterfall over. The re-designed falls are much more interesting than the old version. Water now takes three distinct paths to the pond and is more “lively”. The water flow will be even heavier once we seal some of the gaps with Black Waterfall Foam.

After we finished the lower re-design of the falls, we worked on the coping shelf quite a bit, and trimmed away most of the excess liner and underlayment. The small amount that is still visible will be buried. The section in the foreground shallow area has already been buried. Here’s where we are now:

Here’s a new video of the falls running after the changes:

Tasks still remaining:

– We need to build the waterfall up to obscure the weir
– The rest of the liner needs to be buried/blended with coping shelf rocks
– River Jacks (small colorful stones) need to be spread around most areas
– Plants and landscaping all over

I’m back to work this morning, so no pond work today until early evening. I’ll probably just work on the pathway to the pond – WITH GLOVES ON.

I’ll leave you with a couple of important announcements…
