Awesome workout & dinner yesterday w/photos; Why I train (things change).

The dinner Lisa made for me last night (Pineapple, lime and rum chicken served with Black beans and yellow rice) was incredible! I really enjoy cooking, but it was nice having a night off from the kitchen. Lisa loves watching cooking shows with me, and she’s always cutting recipes out from magazines, but she acts like she can’t find her way around the kitchen. It’s really just lack of confidence due to inexperience; every time she cooks for me it comes out fantastic! She really has a knack for picking out great dishes, too.
Yesterday’s workout was a whole lot of digging. The sod in my backyard is thick and very well rooted, and so digging up the huge plant bed around the pond was a long, hot and grueling workout. The sun actually spent a pretty decent amount of time behind the clouds, so mercifully it was slightly cooler than it has been for the majority of the ongoing pond project (the direct sun has been pretty relentless). Lisa kept my water bottle full (she didn’t feel like working outside yesterday), and I managed to get all the sod dug up! I even began to remove the turned sod and grade the dirt. Here are a few pictures…
I think I’m going to skip today’s weight training workout and finish up out back. I’ve got to remove the rest of the sod, bag it all up and grade the dirt. It will be a good workout.
There was a time when I would have not wanted to skip a weight training workout for something like what I’ll be doing this afternoon. In fact, this “ethic” has become so ingrained in me that my instinct is still, “Hey, you can’t skip your workout!” Total nonsense. What’s the point of getting in shape and having a body I’m happy with if I don’t get out and use it? It’s like spending hours every day polishing a Ferrari that’s never driven. This is why I’ve never been interested in competitive bodybuilding. I respect and understand the incredible amount of work that bodybuilders put in, but it’s just not for me.
Transformation for the sake of transforming has become totally uninteresting to me. What I’ve learned over the years is that a body transformation is something to be excited about, but it’s just the beginning. I’m almost 42 years old, and I’m in the best shape of my life. I’m out there doing all the things I love, and I have the physical ability to do pretty much anything I set my mind on. While I like having a body I’m proud of, it turns out the real rewards of eating right and working out have nothing to do with aesthetics.
