Tadpole watching all morning; Interesting pond transformation.

I’m running way behind this morning, and it’s my own fault! We’ve got family coming over in a little while, and I’ve got so much to do before they arrive… yet I’ve been outside all morning watching the toad tadpoles. I need to back up a bit before I continue with this story…

A day or so after the tadpoles appeared (14 days ago), the pond started to become very murky. Our pond was so new that the helpful bacteria had not had a chance to colonize in the filter media, and I think the tadpoles sort of threw things off a bit. There was also an algae bloom, which made the water green. There are two things that will help with these problems: reduced sunlight and a UV filter. I’m going to add a UV filter, but I’ve read not to do that while the pond is still becoming established because it can kill the helpful bacteria. The sunlight will be cut down once the landscaping is in. So there’s not much I could do about either of these things at this early stage of the pond’s life, so we just had to accept it.

Getting back to my story now. Yesterday I noticed that the pond was considerably less murky, and the greenish tinge had been reduced by about 70%. This morning when I woke up the water was so clear I could see all the way to the bottom, and the green was all but gone! I’m 99% sure the tadpoles are eating the algae and the reason why the pond looks so spectacular this morning! The best part is now that we can see all the way to the bottom, we can see ALL the tadpoles in there. WOW! We knew there were a lot, but I didn’t realize just how many there are. There must be several hundred of them in there, and they are all getting so big now! They seem to be absolutely thriving, and that makes me very happy. I took some new photos and video this morning at feeding time, and I’ll post those on Facebook in a little while if you’re interested in checking it out.

I have to wrap this up. I hope you have a fantastic Sunday!
