Great ride yesterday; Do you HATE cardio?; November “100 Challenge”.

I had a fun and very active day off from work yesterday. After breakfast I loaded up my gear and headed over to Wekiwa State Park for a long ride. I wound up riding just shy of 27 miles, and most of that distance was off-road. I increased my average moving speed on the off-road portion of the circuit by .3 MPH to 7.3 MPH, which is a new personal record. 7.3 MPH may not sound fast, but most of the trail is very difficult due to the sugar sand, large roots, sharp turns, tree stumps and other obstacles. I also manged to make it through all the sugar sand without stopping or even dropping a foot; I’ve never been able to do that before, and it was no small accomplishment! There are a few uphill stretches with sugar sand and roots, and by the time I crested those hills my heart was about to jump out of my chest! The trails out at Wekiwa may not be the the best Central Florida has to offer mountain bikers, but they will whip you into excellent cardio shape if you push yourself (and the scenery and wildlife are very, very nice). I’m very happy that I took the time to explore there. Anyway, here’s the interactive Google Map showing the off-road portion of yesterday’s ride.

I got some very cool mountain biking gear for my birthday! I’ll be posting some reviews in the coming weeks, and making a few long-overdue updates to my Favorite Things thread.

I get lots of emails from people who absolute despise doing cardio. I understand, believe me. Pedaling or running indoors and never moving gets boring fast. I don’t think I’ve been on my stationary recumbent bike more than a couple times over the past year, and that’s because I’ve discovered biking. If you hate cardio but do it for either fat loss or general health purposes, then I strongly encourage you to look into cycling, mountain biking, running or any other outdoor activity that sounds appealing to you. I only started mountain biking a year ago, and over the past year I’ve really grown to love riding. As a relative newcomer to mountain biking I still have a great deal to learn, but that’s a big part of the fun. It’s a deep sport. I can’t even describe how incredible it feels to be blazing through the woods on a narrow single track with my heart bursting out of my chest and all of my senses cranked up to 11. My only regret is that I did not discover this awesome sport sooner! We all want to stay in shape, be healthy and look great; why not have fun while you’re at it? Get out there and find your replacement for boring gym cardio.
