As I mentioned earlier this week, I’m focusing my weight training on strength building right now. So for yesterday’s delts/chest/triceps workout I stuck with compound exercises, low reps and heavy weights. It was a very good workout, but my strength is still not what it was a few months ago. I may be sort of coasting along for the next couple of months from a dietary standpoint, but I’m going to keep training hard in the gym. I want to have plenty of strength when I start my cutting phase on January 3, 2011.

So I guess I just announced the firm date for my pre-spring cut. I’ll be doing this cut pretty much like I do all my cutting cycles: 100% dedication, 100% clean diet, no alcohol, 8 hours of sleep each night, no cheat meals or cheat snacks, no missed workouts and no excuses. Basically an all-out effort until I reach my preferred warm weather body fat level of 7%. Even though my reasons for staying in shape have changed over the years, I still enjoy testing myself by sticking with very structured diet and training programs at least once a year.

Yesterday I posted a short video from Tuesday’s bike ride at a brand new trail. The video was cut down from quite a bit of footage, and I removed all the “boring” uphill stuff. While watching the uphill climbs on video is sort of like watching paint dry, actually climbing those hills is an incredible cardio workout and anything but boring. Turns out this particular trail hit my legs pretty good: my quads and hamstrings are slightly sore this morning. I never – and I mean never get sore muscles from trail riding. With all the weight training I do, even the toughest trail climbs don’t tax my legs enough to compare to stuff like heavy squats and deadlifts. But this trail was a real leg burner. There were a couple of times after long, steep climbs that my heart felt like it was coming out of my chest – and I’m in really good cardio shape right now. Crazy.

After more than a month with no rain, we’re finally getting drenched here in Central Florida! Over the past few days we’ve seen around 3 inches of rain, and more is on the way today as a cold front arrives. All this rain will help make the trails much less sandy and much faster. The timing could not be more perfect: the rain will be gone after today, leaving picture-perfect weather for the weekend. We’re talking clear skies, lows in 40s and highs in the 60s. I’m pretty much going to spend the entire weekend riding.

By the way, I’m going to try chest-mounting my GoPro HD camera this weekend. I think a chest mounted camera will be a nice improvement over the handlebar mount that I’ve been using for a while now. The chest mount should make the video much smoother/less bumpy, but it will also make for much more interesting video. Why? Because the chest mount will show the bike’s handlebars, brake levers, shift levers and front tire, and it will also have my legs and arms in-frame. So instead of woods simply flying by there will be some added perspective and you’ll see how the bike is being controlled and powered as I move along the trail.

Those of you who watched the video I posted yesterday (and didn’t fall asleep) may have noticed that I shot some video of me riding the trail from a third person perspective. Basically I just removed my camera from the bike, set it up in a good location to catch the action and then edited the footage into the final video. I plan to do this more often now, as it definitely helps make the video more interesting.

It’s raining right now, and I think I’m just going to give myself the day off from cardio. I’ll certainly be getting plenty of exercise over the weekend!
