Yesterday’s bike ride was a 20-mile off-road affair over at Wekiwa State Park. I rode the 2.7 mile technical trail twice (I posted a couple of videos of this section of trail here), and on the second run I beat my best time by 45 seconds! My energy was through the roof – probably due to all the food I ate over the Thanksgiving holiday. My cardio felt excellent, and I also felt like I was riding quite well the entire trip. I really rode hard, but when I returned home after completing a little more than 20 miles I felt more satisfied than tired. In fact, I was sort of wishing I’d extended the ride to 30 miles or so. It was a really beautiful morning for biking. As a bonus I saw a large family of deer, one of which let me approach to within a foot.

We stood there together for more than 5 minutes. Her family was all around us, watching with interest. It was so quiet and peaceful. It’s funny how simple moments like that can really have a profound effect, especially on a nature lover like me. When I finally rode off I felt incredible, and that feeling remained with me for the rest of the day.

Today is leg day, and this morning I decided to give my CNS a break from the very heavy lifts I’ve been doing lately. I made this workout more of a muscle endurance and cardio workout: moderate weights, high volume and short rest intervals. I felt great, especially cardio-wise. The short 45-60 second rest intervals are quite a challenge, and I was certainly breathing hard, but I never felt like I was short of breath. I feel like my conditioning is very good right now, but when I finish my upcoming cut I’ll be around 20 pounds lighter than I am now. I think by spring I’ll be in peak riding condition.

Speaking of my upcoming cut, I’ll be doing some things differently this time around. I’m out of time this morning, but I’ll talk about some of the changes in tomorrow’s blog. See you then!
