Where to ride today; Black bears on the trails.

I was asleep by 10:00 last night (actually that’s kind of late for me!) and I slept a full nine hours. I guess I needed it. Lisa is still sick, but thankfully she seems to be improving. I still show no signs of picking up whatever it is she has, but it may be that my body is fighting it off right now with no obvious symptoms – possibly why I needed the extra sleep.

I’ve hardly been on my bike at all over the past week, and I can’t wait to get out on the trails today. I was thinking about going to the new trails over in Mt. Dora, but there have been several reports of a large black bear hanging around there, and this bear doesn’t seem to be afraid of humans. While part of me really would love to see a black bear in the wild (they are generally scared off by humans), I’d rather not come flying around a blind corner and run into one.

A few weeks ago a couple of friends of Lisa’s were jogging on the very same trails I ride over in the Wekiwa forest. While they were running along the trail, they came across a black bear and did exactly what you should never do: they turned and ran. Of course the bear chased them, but thankfully decided to break off the “attack” after about 20 feet. The girls were scared out of their minds, and swear that they will never jog at Wekiwa again.

If I ever see a black bear, knowing me I’ll be more worried about capturing it on video than my safety. 😆

I’m going to eat and figure out where I feel like riding today. Have a great Saturday!
