My conditioning is way off right now; Cutting goals and plans in detail.

Cold, rainy weather combined with a touch of whatever Lisa has kept me indoors this past weekend. As much as I wanted to hit the trails, I think backing off a bit was the right thing to do. This cold or whatever it is that Lisa caught has been lingering for two weeks now, but it seems like I’ve been able to fight it off without any real symptoms. Still, I do not want to become complacent and allow it to take hold – especially right before my cut starts!

And, on the subject of my upcoming cut, it starts two weeks from today (January 4, 2011)! I’m very excited about this cut, but for different reasons than years past. In the past I’ve always cut body fat for aesthetic reasons, but this time I’m losing body fat purely for athletic performance purposes. That’s not to say I don’t want to look good with my shirt off this summer, but that will come as a natural byproduct of reaching ~7% body fat. No, what I’m most stoked about is flying down the bike trails around 25 pounds lighter than I am now, and with far better cardiovascular conditioning.

The last couple of times I’ve been at the trails my performance has been pretty good, but that was mostly due to tenacity; my cardio feels way off right now. I’ve been breathing much harder than I usually do, and it’s really annoying me. I believe there are several reasons why my cardio is off right now:

  • My weight training of late has been almost entirely focused on low reps/heavy weights, so the cardio aspect of those workouts is pretty much gone.
  • I have not been riding as much as I usually do.
  • I have a slight cold that is affecting my breathing.
  • Over the past few months I’ve added body fat.

When I finish my cut I’ll be at least 25 pounds lighter than I am now, I’ll be riding 3-4 times per week (including some indoor HIIT training on the recumbent bike) and I want my resting heart rate back below 40 beats per minute. My resting heart rate has not been that low since 2004 (38 BPM, to be precise), which is when I was in the best cardio shape of my life. I aim to match or beat that. I’ve never had my VO2 max tested, so it might be interesting to have that done when I finish my cut.

My diet has been very loose lately, and with Christmas and a vacation coming up it ain’t gonna get any better before my cut starts. I mentioned that my mom is coming for a visit in the middle of March, and my goal was to have my cut completed by then. 10 weeks is going to be pushing it, especially with another two weeks of a very relaxed diet ahead. If I have not reached my goal by the time my mom arrives I’ll take a week off (we’ll call it a re-feed week… yeah!) and then resume my cut the following week.

My vacation starts this Friday, and I’ve got a lot of work to accomplish before then. I’d better stop rambling and get started on it. Have a great day!
