Destroyed a personal record on the trails; Competitiveness is healthy.

The incredible weather yesterday made it impossible for me to remain indoors. The temperature was in the upper 50s, the sun was shining brightly through the clear blue skies and the air was crisp and clean. Around mid-day (just a few short hours after my back workout) I gave in and went on a 20-mile bike ride at Wekiwa. I was very well warmed up by the time I got to my favorite section of… [Read more]

Great back workout; Weather is incredible; New workout time for cut?

I got up at 5:45 this morning, ate breakfast and got a great back workout in! This week I’ve been doing higher volume “intensity” workouts, and I managed to work up quite a sweat despite the 65 degree (F) indoor temperature (I refuse to turn on the heat unless the indoor temperature gets closer to 60 degrees). It’s been in the upper 30s outside the past couple of nights, and I’m loving the cooler temperatures…. [Read more]

More on my cutting plan (diet and training); My opinion on “fat burners”.

On Tuesday I talked in some detail about my body fat and performance goals for my upcoming cut, and also a bit about my cardio plans. Today I’m going to talk about diet, supplements and training. My strength training on this cut will be pretty similar to what I did last year: alternating weeks of “core” (low volume, heavy compounds) and “intensity” (higher volume, very intense) training. This style of training is something I first… [Read more]

Mastover 15% off sale; December 2010 Transformation Spotlight.

It’s been a very busy and productive morning for me so far. The first of the month is always crazy, but especially so now that I’m working out first thing in the morning. I just fished up a fantastic chest/delts/triceps workout. I decided to do a high volume, very intense workout like I did on leg day (Monday). I’ve been lifting very heavy lately, and I think the brief change in training style will be… [Read more]

First real details about my cutting plan – things are going to be different.

So my 2011 cut is going to be different than those of years past. Of course my primary goal is still fat loss, but I want to tune my body so that it is ideal for mountain biking. I will certainly lose some muscle size, and I truly don’t care about that. What I do not want to lose is my strength, explosiveness and muscle endurance; in fact, I fully expect to gain explosiveness and… [Read more]

Incredible ride yesterday (pic); Killed my legs with volume this morning.

Yesterday’s bike ride was a 20-mile off-road affair over at Wekiwa State Park. I rode the 2.7 mile technical trail twice (I posted a couple of videos of this section of trail here), and on the second run I beat my best time by 45 seconds! My energy was through the roof – probably due to all the food I ate over the Thanksgiving holiday. My cardio felt excellent, and I also felt like I… [Read more]

Turkey for breakfast, followed by a long hard bike ride.

It’s 48 degrees and sunny this morning – awesome trail riding weather! I’m not sure where I’m going to ride yet, but wherever I go I’m definitely going to hit it hard: I need to burn off some of the zillion calories I’ve eaten over the past few days. Before I go I think I’m going to have a big turkey breast sandwich for breakfast, actually. I love Thanksgiving leftovers! I can’t wait to get… [Read more]

Thanksgiving pictures and video.

I’ve been working on getting the Thanksgiving pictures and video assembled this morning, and I got it done just in time for this morning’s update. You can check everything out here if you like (and yes – my cheesy Thanksgiving tricep photo is included). There’s a cold front blowing through right now, so it’s not very nice riding weather. It’s wet, gray and windy. The weather tomorrow should be amazing, so I’m going to make… [Read more]

Fun day yesterday (still full!); Tightening diet up in December.

I hope you all had a fun and safe Thanksgiving! We had a lot of fun, and dinner turned out incredible! Not only did all the food taste great, but the timing of all the dishes was spot-on (the hardest part of cooking a big dinner, IMO). We ate so much that none of us were able to eat desert later that night because we were all still stuffed! I have picture and video, but… [Read more]

Happy Thanksgiving!

I just finished up an excellent workout, and I plan to spend the rest of the day eating a lot of food! We’ve got family coming over shortly, and I’ve still got to clean the house and do some more prep work for dinner. I hope everyone has a fun, safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving! Registration for the December 2010 “100 Challenge” is now underway! Your Official Challenge post must be made by 9:00 AM (EDT)… [Read more]
