Grilled Burgers with Bacon & Caramelized Onions

Grilled Burgers with Bacon & Caramelized Onions

Description

This burger is incredible, but it is definitely not healthy. Save this meal for a special treat!

Ingredients

  • 2 6-oz hamburger patties made with 93% lean ground beef
  • 2 Kaiser roll hamburger buns
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 2 medium yellow onions, sliced very thin
  • 4 slices of bacon
  • lettuce
  • 1 clove garlic, cut in half
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons creamy horseradish
  • tomato, sliced thin
  • 2 slices sharp cheddar cheese

Instructions

Timing is important, so read everything carefully before starting.

  • Pre-heat grill to medium heat.
  • Combine butter, salt, sugar, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce in a saucepan. Heat over med-high heat until butter is melted.
  • Add onions to sauce pan, lower heat to med-low. Cook onions, stirring occasionally, until caramelized – about 20 minutes.
  • When onions are about 1/2 way done, put hamburger patties on grill and cook about 5 minutes per side.
  • Cook bacon until very crispy. I use the microwave, which does an excellent job (about 5 minutes cooking time).
  • Spray hamburger buns with a quick blast of Pam cooking spray and toast until lightly browned.
  • Rub hamburger bun faces with the raw garlic halves.
  • Combine the ketchup and horseradish in a small bowl.
  • With about a minute of cooking time left, put the cheddar cheese on the hamburgers.

Notes

I assemble burgers in this order: lower bun, lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty (with cheese), bacon, caramelized onions, ketchup/horseradish sauce on top bun.
