Avoided deadlifts, but wasn’t happy about it; Two new progress photos.

With my back feeling 100% again, it took all my willpower to stay away from the deadlift area of my home gym. Throughout my entire workout I kept glancing over at my deadlift barbell, which was temptingly pre-loaded with a couple of warm-up plates. Not being able to deadlift right now sucks. It’s like an itch I can’t scratch. As I was heading into the gym for my workout, Lisa said, “Listen, don’t you do anything stupid in there, John.” She knows me well. 🙂

For the back portion of my workout I did bent over DB rows supersetted with body weight wide-grip pull-ups (to failure), heavy low rows and fairly high rep / moderate weight good mornings. I know good mornings sound like an odd exercise to perform while I’m dealing with lower back issues, but I’ve found that as long as I don’t get stupid with the weight they don’t bother my back at all.

I had a request for a recent shot of my abs, and so yesterday morning after breakfast I decided to oblige and take a picture. Later in the day I added another progress picture, this one of my arms. Like most men, my mid-section doesn’t start really cutting up until I get into the single digit body fat percentages, so the abs shot is definitely a work in progress (I’m between 11% and 12% body fat right now). I’ll take another similar photo when I reach my goal of 7% body fat. Both new progress photos can be found in my 2011 Training Photo album.

I think this has been a good week of fat loss progress. I’m looking leaner in the mirror, and my scale weight is down almost two more pounds as of this morning. I’m looking forward to checking my stats in detail when I do my weekly progress report tomorrow morning. Also, as I mentioned earlier this week, starting tomorrow I’ll be including lots of new stats specific to my cardiovascular fitness level.

A little later this morning I’ll be hitting the trails. I’m feeling fantastic right now, and I’m really in the mood for a hard workout. I think I’m going to do 26 miles, most of it off-road. I might post some pictures and, if anything interesting happens, video later on Facebook and the recently expanded Video page of JSF.
