Avoided deadlifts, but wasn’t happy about it; Two new progress photos. February 18, 2011 - Bicep.

With my back feeling 100% again, it took all my willpower to stay away from the deadlift area of my home gym. Throughout my entire workout I kept glancing over at my deadlift barbell, which was temptingly pre-loaded with a couple of warm-up plates. Not being able to deadlift right now sucks. It’s like an itch I can’t scratch. As I was heading into the gym for my workout, Lisa said, “Listen, don’t you do… [Read more]

New cardio style already yielding excellent results.

I am really enjoying the challenge of the extended medium-high intensity cardio sessions I’ve been doing lately. There’s no substitute for real mountain biking, but I feel this style of cardio is the closest indoor facsimile to the workout I get out on the trails. I did another one of these cardio sessions yesterday, and I’ve already noticed some nice improvements. For yesterday’s workout I performed 45 minutes of cardio as follows: I never let… [Read more]

New progress photos; Last quarter of 2010 backslide inspires a challenge. January 17, 2011

Yesterday was my highest volume workout of the week (chest/triceps/delts – here’s the actual workout), and that was just fine by me because I was really in the mood to lift. I know I sound like a broken record, but once again I was able to add weight to every exercise and hit my target rep range. My strength improvements are showing no signs of abatement as I continue to cut body fat and whip… [Read more]

Saw doctor about lower back pain yesterday. Lower back pain.

Yesterday I saw the doctor about the reoccurring lower back injury I’ve been dealing with for the past six years. I was supposed to see Lisa’s doctor, but somehow they screwed that up and I was scheduled with another doctor at the practice. Rather than reschedule, I went ahead and saw the doctor they scheduled me with. The doctor spent a lot of time with me, and I was happy with the care I received…. [Read more]

Tracking internal health changes; Ironman configuration video; Doctor today. AtLarge Nutrition's RESULTS

I’ve got quite a few different topics to cover in this morning’s blog, so let’s jump right into it… I received a lot of great feedback on yesterday’s blog – thanks! I realize that many people who come to this site are almost entirely focused on making external changes (drop fat, add muscle); believe me, I get that – I really do. I understand from firsthand experience how awesome it is to work hard and… [Read more]

Cardiovascular fitness: HRrest, HRmax, HRR, HR Recovery and VO2 MAX. My HR Rest - February 12, 2011

Regular readers of this blog know how important I feel it is to track and evaluate progress on a fixed schedule. In general I recommend that a complete set of measurements, a body fat reading (using a 7 or 9 point ) and are taken first thing in the morning once per week. I choose to perform these measurements and evaluate my progress every Sunday. The above-mentioned measurements are perfect for tracking body composition changes,… [Read more]

2011 cut weekly progress report: week #6. Slim Guide Skin Fold Caliper

Week #6 of my 2011 cut is complete and it’s time for my weekly progress report. As of today I’ve gone six full weeks with no missed workouts, no cheat meals and no alcohol. The reason I’m so strict is simple: I want to see the maximum amount of results in the shortest period of time. This requires that I put in a 100% effort at all times: anything less is unacceptable to me. I… [Read more]

Chronic lower back injury: I need to get to the bottom of this. Lower Back Pain.

I’m pretty frustrated this morning. Yesterday I added 10 more pounds to my deadlift, and during the second-to-last working set my lower back came apart yet again. 🙁 I’ve had lower back issues most of my adult life, and when I really get up there in weight for squats and deads it seems like I’m playing Russian Roulette. I really don’t think the issue is muscular: the pain is always in the exact same spot,… [Read more]
