Decided to try something a little different for yesterday’s cardio. Timex Ironman Heart Rate Monitor

On Tuesday morning I did a 45-minute fasted LISS (Low Intensity Steady-State) cardio session. I kept my heart rate at 145 BPM (about 75% of my maximum heart rate) and my breathing never changed. To say the cardio was unchallenging would be quite an understatement… So yesterday afternoon the original plan was to do a fairly lengthy 22-minute High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) cardio session. About 30 minutes before my workout I decided that I… [Read more]

New quads photo; Today’s cardio; New Favorite Things item. Fuel for Mountain Bikes

After Tuesday’s blog, in which I described one of the best/toughest leg workouts of my life, I received an email asking if I would mind taking a new picture of my quads. My legs were still pretty sore yesterday, but I flexed for the camera and added the photo to my 2011 Photo Album. My quads measure 24.25 inches in this photo, and I’m around 12% body fat. There is some quad separation showing right… [Read more]

I’ve decided to incorportate a LISS session into my weekly cardio program.

Last Wednesday I mentioned that I felt my HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) cardio workout the day after leg day felt less than optimal. Simply put, my legs were too fatigued from my leg workout the day prior to generate the intensity I require to seriously challenge my cardio system. I mentioned that I was considering a change to fasted LISS (Low Intensity Steady-State) cardio on Tuesday morning. So, for the first time on this… [Read more]

Gutted out one of the toughest workouts of my life. Squat area of my gym.

All of my workouts have been excellent so far on this cut, but the two leg training sessions leading up to yesterday’s workout were particularly noteworthy. Yesterday when I was heading into the gym I knew I was going to have a serious battle on my hands if I was going to best last week’s performance… The leg workout I’m doing right now is very high volume (you can find the actual workout here), and… [Read more]

Enjoyed another old favorite recipe last night; It’s LEG DAY! Spicy Grilled Cilantro Shrimp

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been dusting off some old recipes, mainly because I need pictures for the completely revamped Recipe section of the web site. Last night I made Spicy Grilled Cilantro Shrimp for the first time in ages, and it was terrific! This shrimp recipe is actually a modified version of the excellent Cilantro Salmon recipe (which is on-tap for this week–picture coming soon). The way the Cilantro Shrimp recipe came… [Read more]

2011 cut weekly progress report: week #5 EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #5 of my 2011 cut is in the books, and it’s time for my usual weekly progress report. NOTE: If you’re trying to lose fat or gain muscle it’s absolutely critical that you check your progress–and not just with a bathroom scale. I recommend that once every week you check your scale weight, your body fat percentage (using a caliper, not an inaccurate BIA scale) and your soft tape measurements. For maximum accuracy, it’s… [Read more]

Finished up week #5 with a strong workout! 45 pound plate

I was feeling slightly tired heading into the gym yesterday afternoon, but I knew that once I started training I would shake that off. Sure enough, after just a few sets of warm-up deadlifts I started feeling very solid. Last week I made a pretty nice jump in weight and added 20 pounds to my deadlift working sets. Getting those last couple of reps up was extremely difficult, but I did manage to grind them… [Read more]
