Feeling 100%, and another great workout; 2 new progress photos.

I’m so glad that I listened to my gut instinct and took a few days off from lifting last week. The stubborn side of me was saying, “Push through until you hit your goal!”, but my body was desperately trying to tell me that a little bit of a break was in order. More than eight weeks of extremely intense and very high volume workouts while in a caloric deficit is tough enough, but capping that run off with three straight days of very physical outdoor labor was really pushing it. Even though I initially resisted the idea of a few days off, I feel vindicated now: yesterday was my second outstanding performance in the gym this week. Last week I was dragging my butt around feeling tired and run down, and this week I’m feeling 100% again. Instead of limping across the finish line, now I’ll be blasting through the final few weeks of this cut with a maximal effort.

March 9, 2011, around 9% body fat

March 9, 2011, around 9% body fat

I took a couple of new progress pictures yesterday. The first picture is a quads progress photo. If you compare the picture of my quads now (at around 9% body fat) to the quads picture I took exactly one month ago (at ~12% body fat), you’ll see that there has been a noticeable improvement in definition. I think when I hit my goal of 7% body fat there will be an even more pronounced difference. Of course aesthetics is not really the goal here: it’s performance. My wheels are not going to win any bodybuilding contests, but they are strong, powerful and able to efficiently move me over some pretty long and grueling mountain biking trails.

The other picture I posted yesterday in my 2011 Training Photo Gallery is a black and white photo of my arms and triceps. Even though my arms tend to look pretty cut up all the time (I don’t store much fat there), over the past week or two I have noticed some increased definition and greatly improved vascularity. My vascularity doesn’t really show in this particular shot, so I’ll probably post another photo sometime this week that shows it a little better. Of course I’m still around 9% body fat right now, so the changes over the next few weeks should be pretty dramatic as I close in on my goal of 7% body fat.

It’s raining like crazy right now, so today’s cardio is going to be an afternoon medium/high intensity 45-minute session on the recumbent bike. I’m going to keep my average heart rate around 170 BPM, which is a walk in the park compared to a real mountain bike ride.
