Update on my lower back pain.

It’s been awhile since I’ve mentioned my lower back pain. The reason for the silence is twofold: my back has not been bothering me at all, and also because I’ve been waiting for the hospital to get approval from my insurance company for the MRI that my doctor ordered. Thankfully it looks like my insurance company is not going to throw up any resistance! I heard from the hospital yesterday, and we’ve got the MRI scheduled for a week from today (April 5, 2011). I am very curious to see what the MRI tells us. Hopefully whatever it is can be corrected with the help of a sports doctor, a physical therapist and/or other treatments that don’t involve surgery. Even if surgery is recommend, that is something I am going to have to put a lot of thought into before agreeing to it. I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself here, so for now I’ll just say that I’m glad that the MRI will be done.

On a related note, some of you may recall that when I first went to my doctor about my lower back pain she prescribed an anti-inflammatory called “Celebrex”. The prescription was a temporary measure intended to provide some relief from the constant aching I feel in my lower back when I’m mountain biking and gardening (among other activities). I mentioned in my blog a few weeks back that the Celebrex didn’t help at all–not even a little bit. My doctor gave me another prescription for a different anti-inflammatory called “Piroxicam”, and this one does seem to be helping. I was very active over my vacation, and in yesterday’s blog I talked about the work I did on Sunday expanding the landscaping around my backyard pond. This type of work (digging up large portions of very established sod and then removing it) normally creates a lot of lower back pain for me. It wasn’t until I was done that I realized that my back hadn’t bothered me all day! After I’d finished the job and showered I was standing in the kitchen cooking when it dawned on me that my back had not bothered me all day long. Like I said, the anti-inflammatory is merely a temporary solution, but it is nice to have some measure of relief while we figure this thing out.

It’s a cardio day, and this is my easy day (my day off, as it were): 45 minutes of fasted LISS. It’s after eight, so I need to get on the bike!
