I've been eating a lot of Spicy Baked Chicken this week!

Yesterday’s calories were about 700 over my usual training day cutting calories, and I’m continuing to feel my strength slowly return as I refeed. Yesterday’s workout was below average, but better than the previous two this week. Man, I really crashed hard!

My scale weight this morning is down to 176.4 pounds, which is 2.2 pounds less than last Sunday’s weight of 178.6 pounds. I didn’t expect that. It will be interesting to see if this was fat loss or lean mass loss when I take my measurements and body fat reading tomorrow. Based on how I look in the mirror and my loss of strength, I have a suspicion that the scale weight loss was lean mass: a combination of water and maybe a little muscle. Part of the water and strength loss is likely due to the fact that I cycled off creatine (I forgot to mention this until now). Creatine usually adds a couple of pounds in water weight for me, so that’s probably the reason for the scale weight reduction… I guess the scale weight loss is not that surprising after all. I doubt that I’ve lost any fat this week with all the extra calories I’ve been consuming, but we’ll see tomorrow morning for sure.

At 176.4 pounds (and I probably still have a pound or two left to lose in order to reach my current goal of 7% body fat), this is the lightest I’ve been in many, many years. Being this light is actually what I wanted. The lighter I am, the less weight I have to carry around on the trails and the faster I’m able to ride. Being light is helpful, but it’s very important to me that my strength and muscle endurance remain high. I have a feeling that once this cut is over and I’m eating at maintenance level (probably around 2,500-2,700 calories per day) my strength will continue to improve. I’ve already noticed a huge difference in how nimble I am on the trails now compared to how I felt last December when I was more than 25 pounds heavier!

Back tomorrow with my weekly progress report. Have a fantastic Saturday!

  1. I think being lighter as you age (not that I’m trying to “age” you or anything) is a good move John. Many successful athletes try to shed weight later in their careers and to much success. Michael Strahan comes to mind.

I’d put being over 200 pounds again in the past permanently, ever think about that?

    • While I can’t say with 100% certainty how I’ll feel a year from now or whatever, what I can say is that right now I have no desire to add any appreciable amounts of additional muscle mass (or fat, of course).
