Good morning!

Good morning!

Lisa is out of town on business this week, and so last night I decided to grab a DVD (Taxi Driver–one of my all-time favorite films) and go to bed early. I was pretty tired from my leg workout, and I only made it about 40 minutes before my eyelids started feeling heavy…

This morning I woke up at 4:55 AM, which is about an hour earlier than my usual time. After feeding Loki I realized that I neglected to turn on the coffee maker, and so I decided to go ahead and get my cardio done (I always do 45-minutes of fasted LISS cardio the day after leg day). I think this was only like the 4th or 5th time over the past eight years that I’ve done my cardio before having my morning coffee. I barely even remember doing the first 25 minutes or so, so it’s almost like I got 45 minutes for 1/2 price. 😆

Anyway, so now my cardio is done, I’m showered, I’ve eaten breakfast, I’ve done quite a few of my regular morning tasks and I’ve got my second cup of strong black coffee in front of me. I’m generally very productive in the morning anyway, but this extra hour is quite nice. It’s not even 8:00 AM and I’ve already accomplished so much. I’d love to start getting up at 5:00 AM from now on, but I don’t think realistically I can be in bed and sleep asleep by 9:00 PM on most nights (if I don’t get close to 8 hours of sleep I’m a mess the next day).

This weekend I’m planning to spend some creative time in the kitchen, so expect to find another new recipe or two in the Recipe Section by the end of the weekend or early next week!

  1. John, I’d be interested to hear about your thoughts on coffee consumption; knowing your history, I have no doubt you’ve done research. I’m assuming you don’t buy into the notion that coffee is a bad thing? And you’re drinking it black – a conscious choice for health? Just curious.

    • I don’t think coffee is unhealthy all. Of course too much caffeine can be a problem for some, but a cup or two in the morning is just fine for most healthy individuals.

      I drink it black because I like it that way, and I always have. 🙂

  2. So is your normal bed time 10pm ? 10 – 6? Getting up early is great, you can get so much done. I like to sleep in on weekends, to 7-7:30 am, any later and I feel like I’ve lost time.

  3. I’m wondering about your fasted cardio. I’ve read that your body is in a catabolic state when you wake up and is more likely to use muscle as fuel if you perform intense aerobic exercise without eating. Is that something I should be worried about?

  4. hey John just saw your `skinny` guy picks and a was shocked!!! You look great dont get me wrong but you looked so much better with a few more pounds on your frame – although I guess for long term health skinnier is better??
    Anyways -keep up your great site and you are an inspiration to us all either big or skinny!!!
