Are you getting enough sleep?

Yesterday I was up at 4:55 AM, and this morning I slept until 6:45 AM. 😆 I was in bed by 10:00 last night, but I didn’t fall asleep until around 10:30, and so that’s why I slept so late this morning. I have not set an alarm in ages because I always wake up after getting almost exactly eight hours of sleep. The trick is to be in bed early enough to get my full eight hours. This is easy for me because I start crashing hard if I’m up past ten at night. I’ve become such a morning person–I simply can not stay up late anymore. Contrast that to my habits before my transformation when I stayed up on most nights until three or four in the morning and then slept as late as noon. I’ve discovered that I really am more of a morning person: my productivity and mental clarity are best in the first few hours after I wake up. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to bed frustrated with a work-related networking problem and then solved the problem within minutes of waking up the next morning.

The human body does most of its rebuilding and repairing while asleep, and so it’s a shame that a lot of people discount how important a good night of sleep is to body re-composition and overall physical and mental performance. If you don’t give your body the sleep it needs then quite a bit of the hard work you’re putting in at the gym is being squandered. I’m not saying everyone needs eight hours like I do. Some people need more, and some need less. As always, it really pays to listen to your body and know yourself.

  1. John, when do you usually take in your last cup of coffe/soda during the day? Ive found over the years to cut it off after 1pm otherwise ill still be laying in bed wired at 11pm.
