My dumbbell rack

I had another excellent workout yesterday afternoon (back, biceps and traps). I’m still not deadlifting or squatting right now, and my back continues to feel absolutely 100% fine. Not only have I had no acute lower back pain, the constant dull ache that I have to deal with while working in the yard or mountain biking has not bothered me in weeks. I still have a bottle full of the NSAID that my doctor prescribed, and I’ve not even needed those in weeks. You know what? I love deadlifting and squatting (especially deadlifting), but if those two exercises are the only things that cause whatever is wrong with my lower back to flare up then I’m done with them. I’ve been able to work around those two exercises just fine, and my athletic performance and strength have not suffered at all.

Last night for post-workout meal #2 I made Unbelievable Chicken. You guys have got to try this recipe! Yeah, there’s a little brown sugar in it, but it’s not much per serving, especially considering it’s in the marinade (quite a bit of which never makes it to the plate). Heck, I ate this while I was cutting down to 7% body fat and it didn’t hurt me any.

As of this morning my scale weight is down almost a half pound since my cut ended. I still have not had a cheat meal, either (nor have I really craved one). I guess I need to eat more, and that’s no problem! 😆

Sunrise over the pond - April 22, 2011

I’m so glad the weekend is finally here. This weekend I am going to take it easy and not do too much physical activity. I’ll get a bike ride in either today or tomorrow, but apart from that I’m going to relax, watch some movies take some pictures and work on my new web site.

New web site?! I mentioned this on Facebook earlier this week, but I’ve not brought it up in my blog until now. The new web site I’ve decided to create is not fitness-related, it’s more of a creative outlet for a few other interests of mine: the backyard pond, the creatures that live in and among the pond, the plants that grow in and around the pond and nature photography. The new site is called John’s Pond (http://www.johnspond.com), and I hope to have it completed and launched sometime very soon. It will be a regularly updated blog (not updated daily like JSF, but at least a couple times per week) with a focus on photographs and video. I’ll also put together some articles on landscaping, waterscaping, critters that like to live around ponds (like toads and frogs) and pond construction. I’ll let you guys know when the new site launches!

  1. After getting up at 4:25am yesterday how was your energy later on in the day? If I get up that early I need to crash early that night or take a nap in afternoon.

  2. Hey John — I wonder if going lighter with higher reps would be easier on your back. I have problems with my hip/upper quad and ITB on my left side….which are severe enough to pretty much kill any heavy squatting for me. But, I can go high rep (10-20 reps per set) without probs.

Glad you are able to work around it though — low back injuries are no fun.

    • Joe, I’m pretty sure it’s only the moderate to really heavy stuff that kills my back. So yeah, at some point I may try these lifts again using lighter weights (especially deads, which I do miss), but right now I’m going to extend this test by avoiding both of them for the next few months.
