Loki always knows when to take a break!

I’m ready for a week off from weight training. In general I like to take a week off from lifting every 6-8 weeks, however–like most things related to fitness–this is not a hard and fast rule. I mainly go by feel, and right now I definitely feel like I could use a break. It’s been almost two months since I took time off from lifting, and even that was just a few days. The last time I took a full week off from the gym was late last year.

Occasionally I’ll take a week off from everything (indoor cardio, mountain biking, weight training) but a week completely off is pretty rare for me. In most cases when I take some time off from lifting I like to remain active. Unless I’m feeling completely fried stopping all physical activity for an entire week does me more harm than good because I start to feel like a caged animal. So this week I’ll be doing plenty of physical activity: yard work, mountain biking, indoor cardio and maybe a couple of small projects outside.

People often ask me when they should take time off from lifting. Again, there’s no hard and fast rule here. A lot of it has to do with how often you lift, how heavy you lift, the intensity of your workouts, your diet/caloric level, your stress level and several other factors. So my advice is simple: listen to what your body is telling you!
