Wasp attack!

At least 5 wasp stings.

At least 5 wasp stings.

Last night just before bed I accidentally disturbed a large paper wasp nest that I did not see in the dark. Man, those little guys were really pissed! I was instantly attacked and stung at least five times all around my lower right bicep. Wasp stings hurt, but I don’t find them to be incredibly painful. I usually just go, “Ow, damn it!” and go about my business. The multiple stings hurt quite a bit more than a single sting, and I shattered the calm of our quiet neighborhood evening with a rapid-fire barrage of curses. At least one neighbor came out to see what all the commotion was about. I think he figured it out when I returned to the front porch with a can of wasp killer and a bloodthirsty look in my eyes.

Actually, I don’t mind wasps and bees at all. I leave them alone and they leave me alone. It’s accidental meetings like last night that makes the relationship difficult. I go out of my way to avoid ever harming any living creature, and would not kill the wasps if they didn’t pose a such serious danger to Lisa (she is highly allergic) and Loki. Having said that, my arm was hurting so bad after the attack that it made the inevitable task a little easier for me.

Thankfully I feel fine this morning, so aside from a little localized pain I’m no worse for wear. I think I’m going to load up my Camelbak and hit the trails – I’m in the mood for a challenge, so this should be a good ride.

  1. Didn’t mean to chuckle at your expense, but it reminded me of an incident a few years ago when I was living in Coeur d’Alene, ID. I climbed up a ladder to get on my roof to clean some leaves off. Right when I was pulling myself up on the roof, I disturbed a wasp nest I didn’t know was there. As I scrambled to get out of the way up the roof, I knocked the ladder down. Those little buggahs nailed me several times. I was stuck up on the roof for almost an hour waiting for someone to come by and put my ladder back up. I got back at them though when I armed myself with two cans of Raid Wasp Spray and went back to do battle with superior weapons.
