Excellent 27.1 mile mountain bike ride yesterday tarnished by sad sight.

Yesterday's "Bike on a Trail" photograph.

The heat was almost unbearable yesterday, but I really wanted to get some quality mountain biking miles in. I rode for as long as time would allow, and I rode hard. When I completed my 27.1 mile mountain biking ride the temperature was climbing into the mid-90s (F) with a “feels like” temperature of over 100 degrees. I’ve done quite a bit of biking while the temperatures were in the 90s, but yesterday felt especially hot. In fact yesterday’s ride was the most uncomfortable ride I’ve been on, so I can definitely attest to the accuracy of the “feels like” temperature. I consumed 90 ounces of water while biking and still dropped over 2 pounds of water weight.

As I mention in Monday’s post-vacation report, I did not do any biking or training last week. Other than quite a bit of walking the only real exercise I got while on vacation was a one-mile jog. Even after just one week off I definitely could feel the difference in my cardio and stamina yesterday. It’s not like I felt out of shape or anything like that, but I didn’t have that invincible “machine” feel that I’ve been enjoying lately. My muscle endurance was still excellent, but I felt a tad more winded than usual when my heart rate was in the mid 180s and above. I still pushed very hard, I maxed my heart rate twice and my average heart rate was in the mid-170s.

Florida is experiencing a pretty serious drought right now, and last week when I was at Prevatt Lake I couldn’t believe how much it had receded. We’ve not had any rain over the past week, so I anticipated the situation to be a little worse, but I was not prepared for what I saw when I arrived there yesterday. I’ll let my photographs tell the story (move your mouse over the images to see my captions)…
