Yesterday’s bike ride went better than expected!

So yesterday morning I was going to go for a bike ride before it got too hot, but things didn’t work out that way. I forgot that I had some work that I needed to get done first thing in the morning (thank goodness for phone calendar alarms!), and by the time I finished everything it was around lunch time. It was extremely hot outside (I think the heat index was something like 104 degrees) but I really wanted to get some riding in. Because of what happened on Saturday I am being extremely cautious about the heat right now, and I considered getting on the recumbent bike in my gym… nah, too boring! My Sport Beans are still en route, so I left my camera home to make room in my CamelBak for a large bottle of Gatorade.

I decided to stick around the neighborhood, and never ventured more than 3 or 4 miles from my house. Lisa was off yesterday, so knowing I could call her if I got in trouble was a nice safety blanket. I know all this sounds a little overly-cautious, but I’ve never had anything like what happened on Saturday happen to me before and I don’t want to go through that again.

The ride went amazingly well. It was hot as hell outside, and I sweat my butt off, but I never felt weak or any different from any other ride I’ve taken in the heat. My original plan was to keep the ride to 8 or 10 miles, but I wound up doing just shy of 20 miles! I did get my heart rate up there a few times, but I didn’t ride all-out for long periods of time like I usually do when I’m mountain biking.

When I finished the 20 miles I felt fantastic! I think I’m pretty well recovered from the heat exhaustion, but I’m still going to wait another week before resuming my usual style off riding. For now I am very happy that I am able to get out in the heat again with no ill-effects. It was a terrible feeling in the days following the heat exhaustion to feel queasy just walking around for a few minutes in the sun.

Today is my back, biceps and traps workout. I’m going to go ahead and do a very heavy, low rep workout like the one I did on Wednesday. I think I’m in the mood for some dumbbell pullovers and some T-bar rows: it’s been ages since I’ve done those two exercises.

Have a great Friday!
