About halfway through my bulk, December 2008.

About halfway through my bulk, December 2008.

I went super heavy for yesterday’s back workout, and it felt great to do so, but it’s a bit of an ego hit when I go heavy because my strength is not what it once was. These days the focus of my training is on muscle endurance and intensity, and I’ve been very successful in that capacity: my cardio and muscle stamina are both far better than they have ever been. I’m still pretty strong for an old guy, but when I was bulking in late 2008/early 2009 I was moving some pretty decent weights around.

Of course my body weight back at the beginning of 2009 was significantly greater than it is now. I just checked, and my weight at the end of my 2008/2009 bulk was 220.2 pounds! I’m about 45 pounds lighter than that now. As for a lean mass comparison, my body fat at the end of that bulk was 13.8% and that means I was packing about 190 pounds of lean mass back then. Right now at around 8% body fat my lean mass total is more like 161 pounds.

I’m very happy with how I presently look and how I perform in the sports I enjoy, so no regrets there. However, there’s always going to be that nagging voice in the back of my mind that won’t let me forget the strength and size potential that was (is still?) there. I seem to have pretty good genetics for packing on the mass when I want to, and I certainly do enjoy bulking. Will I ever do another bulk? Right now the answer is “no”, but I’ve learned to never say never. 🙂

There has been rain all around us for the past few days, but we’ve had none of it. This morning it sprinkled just enough to barely wet the ground. Now the sun is out and it feels like a steam bath outside. I’m going to get a ride in this morning, but I’m really not in the mood to deal with the humidity. I don’t think this is going to be a very long ride, so I think I’m going to make it an intense ride with some HIIT-style intervals.
