August 5, 2011: Banana plants just 4 months after planting!

The three tiny little banana plants that we planted behind the pond just four months ago are growing so fast that I can hardly believe it. The tallest of the three plants is now more than 11 feet high! The plants are absolutely thriving in the hot, humid weather we’ve been having. The granular feeding I gave them a few weeks back also seems to have made a big difference. They are producing their distinctive looking tropical leaves so quickly that I can almost sit out back and watch them unfurl in real-time.

This is the first time I’ve ever grown banana plants, and I’m really glad that I decided to do it. I’m not a huge fruit eater, but I do love bananas. In fact, the meal I like to consume before mountain biking is a Nitrean smoothie with 1/2 cup raw oats and a banana (good pre-ride potassium, protein and carbs).

When we planted these banana plants in early spring we knew they were supposed to be fast growers, but I certainly didn’t expect any of them to be more than 11 feet high just four months later. Compare the picture on the left to the picture I took this morning: these guys were tiny we put them in the dirt back in late March!

I can’t wait until the banana plants start producing fruit. We might be harvesting as soon as late fall!

If you live in an area that can grow banana plants, I highly recommend that you give it a try. We selected the Dwarf Cavendish variety, and they’ve proven to be very easy to grow. We’ve not had any problems with pests or disease, and the plants are thriving with just basic feedings, water and plenty of sun.

I’m going to go get my workout out of the way this morning. I want to try and knock off work around 4:00 and get back to my garage cleaning and re-organizing project. Things are shaping up really well out there! In a future blog I’ll have lots of pictures of my new bike maintenance and repair area, along with an article (or video?) on how you can set up your own home bike repair shop without breaking the bank.

  1. I had a recent project just like that with my basement and garage. I can’t describe the feeling one gets when stuff like that is complete, but I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about.

    • The reclaimed water restriction only applies to “wash and eat” produce. If there’s an outer peel, it’s fine. In addition to bananas we’ve got lemons, oranges, limes, grapefruit, figs and papaya trees growing in the backyard.
