Bike on a Trail shot for August 24, 2011.

I had a muddy good time yesterday! I did a total of 32.3 miles, it was hotter than hell and the humidity was stifling. I didn’t care: getting back on my steed after cooling my heels for more than a week felt great. I enjoyed every sweat-drenched mile.

Check out yesterday’s Bike on a Trail photograph. I told you we’ve been getting a lot of rain! I took my camera out of the Cotton Carrier and put it in my CamelBak for this section (and a couple of others like it). See that rooty spot in the middle of the water? It’s higher than it looks. I bunny hopped off the top of it and when I landed I sent mud and water flying about 10 feet into the air. I had a huge grin on my face the entire time.

My Trek Fuel EX 8 handled all the water and dirt without any problems at all. I am so happy with the new bike, it’s changed everything. When I rode my hardtail I had to deal with my lower back constantly aching while I was riding, as well as pain in my ankles when landing jumps. All of those nagging problems are a thing of the past, and that’s made mountain biking much more enjoyable. Even after more than 32 miles of hard cross country riding yesterday I was 100% pain-free.

Apparently me and this deer were about the only creatures willing to brave the heat today. Apart from birds I didn't see anyone or anything all day long.

I should also mention that my Shimano PD-M647 clipless pedals along with my Pearl iZUMi X-Alp Enduro II Mountain Bike Shoes handled the mud and wet really well. I had no problem clipping in and unclipping, even when everything was covered in mud.

I resisted going clipless for a long time, but now that I’ve been riding clipped in for about a month I can’t imagine doing it any other way. It’s amazing how much more confident my riding has become knowing my feet aren’t coming off the pedals. Also, there are a few hills that I used to struggle to maintain 6 or 7 miles per hour while climbing: yesterday during the last mile of my ride I took two of those hills in rapid succession and I never fell below 11 MPH. Again, this was at the very end of a long and tough ride.

I think I’m going to start researching cross country racing in my neck of the woods (no pun intended). I want to compete. 🙂

    • While I’m confident with my cardio and stamina, I’m woefully inexperienced compared to seasoned racers. I think for that reason I’m going to get my ass handed to me, at least for awhile. That’s OK, though, I’ll become a better rider much faster that way. 🙂

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be much pure XC action around here. I’m still searching, but I may have to move. 😀
