My new bike transport vehicle?

My new bike transport vehicle?

I’ve never really liked strapping bikes to the back of my SLK-350. Even though I go to great lengths to make sure the trunk mount is securely attached to the car, I’ve been very reluctant to go to some of the more distant trails. I’ve noticed that at highway speeds the bikes buffet and sway around, and that has always made me nervous. Also, there’s really no way to lock the bikes down with this setup, so I can’t even run into the store for 5 minutes for fear of having my bikes stolen.

For many years I’ve been thinking about getting a truck, and I think it’s finally time. There are quite a few amazing and very challenging trails within 50-80 miles of my home, and with a truck I’ll be able to securely and confidently transport my bikes to the trailheads. Also, as most of you know, I do a lot of gardening and projecting around the house; I can’t tell you how many time I’ve been at the home center saying, “Man, I really need a truck!”

By the way, if I may digress for a moment, some of you may be wondering how there could be any “amazing” mountain biking trails in Florida (which is pretty flat). Two words: Phosphate mining. There are some incredible mountain biking trail systems in Florida that have been built on reclaimed phosphate mining areas. Back when the phosphate was mined, vast amounts of dirt was moved over a period of many years. These often massive (400+ acres) old phosphate mining sites are ideal mountain biking areas due to the elevation changes, hills, valleys and ridges that are otherwise seldom seen in Florida. Some of the trails are extremely difficult (double black diamond), and if you saw them you’d never believe you were in Florida.

Back to the truck. I’m not after anything fancy, I just want something reliable with low miles and a warranty. I’ve found a truck that I’m very interested in, and I’m going to go check it out today or tomorrow. It’s a Ford F150 Supercab, black, hard tonneau cover, 5.4L V8, 35k miles, 1 year bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 100% clean Carfax. I’m not digging the wheels on that thing at all, but that’s not a deal breaker.
