Bike on a Trail photo for September 8, 2011.

The trails were wet, often muddy and very slippery yesterday. A few of the “root garden” sections were very tricky, and I came pretty close to eating it a couple of times. Thankfully I managed to stay on my bike over the course of the 26.2 mile ride, and I had an absolute blast out there!

I mentioned in yesterday’s blog that I was in the mood to do some exploring, and I did. I found some new trails that I’d not been on before, but they were nothing spectacular. There was one trail that was labeled as a horse-only trail, but it was barely even wide enough to be called a singletrack trail and it was extremely overgrown. There was also a lot of mud and standing water. There’s no way a horse could get through there–especially with a rider on top of him. I’d say this overgrown section was about a mile long, and I flew through it pretty fast. When I emerged I was soaking wet (mostly from crashing through the wet plants) and my bike and legs were covered in mud.

I only stopped to take photos one time the entire ride. I didn’t see many animals, and besides I was in one of those moods to ride hard and fast. I think part of the reason I was in the mood to ride fast is because I’d not done any real exercise all week, but also because it was not nearly as hot as it has been all summer long. The hot and humid weather is extremely draining, but because I ride so often I’ve adapted to it quite well. I’m telling you, when fall comes and we get our first cold snap I’m probably going to do 40 miles out there, and it will feel comparatively easy.

So, that flank pain I’ve been experiencing? Yeah, I think my doctor was right on with his diagnosis that the pain is muscular. I took my first Mobic (an anti-inflammatory) yesterday morning and since then I’ve not felt any flank pain at all. When I woke up this morning and sat up I instinctively braced myself for the pain, but it never came. Nice.

One other thing. You may recall that in mid-august I mentioned that I went OTB (Over The Bars). When I hit the ground I banged my knee, but at the time it felt like nothing. Well, ever since then after about 12-15 miles that knee would start to ache. I figured it was just taking forever to fully heal because I’m old, so I haven’t mentioned it. Well yesterday was the first time since I injured the knee that it didn’t hurt. I think the Mobic is why. Hopefully that injury can heal up while I’m taking the Mobic, too.

Because I’ve not trained with weights at all this week, I’m going to go ahead and skip today’s weight training workout as well. I was about due for a week off, anyway.

Happy Friday!
