It’s mid-September and the weather is still very hot and humid here in Central Florida. I am so sick of spending 4-6 hours every week doing yard work, needing to take a gallon of water on mountain bike trips and breaking a sweat when I take Loki out back to play for 5 minutes. Yep, it’s been a very long, hot summer and I can’t wait for the cool snaps we’ll be getting hopefully sometime soon.

I recall that last October I took a week of vacation time and the weather was probably the nicest I’ve ever seen. Every single day was cool, sunny and clear. I did tons of mountain biking and kayaking that week, and barely spent any time at all indoors.

My vacation time reset at the beginning of August, and when it reset I still had more than a week that I never used. The unused time rolled over, so this year I’ve got like 30-something vacation/personal days available to use. I’ve sort of got my finger on the “I’m taking a week off!” button, but I’m waiting for the weather to cool down a bit. I’m almost certain I’ll be taking a week off in October.

When I do pull the trigger on a week off I’m going to make a 2 or 3 day trip to Santos mountain bike park in Ocala. Santos is pretty much known for having the best mountain biking in Florida, and possibly in all of the southeast. There’s more than 84 miles of singletrack, a two-mile freeride trail, dirt jumps, two pump tracks and seven big drops (including a massive 20-footer, which I will definitely NOT be trying).

The park is just 70 miles from me, and it’s silly that I’ve never made the trek before. Here are the trails on Google Maps. The place is just massive. Even if I’m there 3 days there’s no way I could see everything.

Speaking of biking, I need to hit the trails and get at least 20 miles in this morning!
