Coming off what was probably my worst maintenance week so far this year (my body fat rose from 8.3% to 8.8%), I have focused on really tightening up my diet. As I mentioned in this past Sunday’s weekly progress report, over the past 2 weekends I’ve been pretty lax with my diet (2 or 3 full-blown cheat meals and a few semi-cheat meals). So far this week my diet has been 100% clean, but my cravings for less-than-healthy dinners have been strong.

When I completed my cut almost 24 weeks ago (during which I did not have any cheat meals at all), the desire for junk food wasn’t really there. Every couple of weeks I’d develop a craving for something decadent and allow myself to indulge, but maintaining a clean diet wasn’t at all difficult.

The past couple of weekends, however, saw me indulging far more than usual, and now this week the cravings for junk food have been much stronger than they have been since my cut ended. It’s interesting how that works, isn’t it?

So what I’m doing now is forcing myself to get back to that place where junk food doesn’t sound very appealing. It’s taking some discipline to do that, but once I get through a couple of weeks of 100% clean eating it won’t be hard at all. Habits (good or bad) die hard, so focus on developing good ones! Doing so will make your life much easier.

Speaking of good habits, it’s time for me to satisfy another never-ending craving and get some mountain biking in before work!

  1. Very interesting observation, John. I agree with this. Some people have no problem keeping junk food in their diet and eating small portions sporadically. As for the rest of us, it seems as though even having a little junk food tends to trip a mechanism in our brain that craves more of the same crap…similar to a drug-like effect. For myself I find this true with sweet foods like ice cream or candy. I can have the occasional pizza or fast food splurge and I won’t get any cravings but put a little sugar in my system and I need that fix like a fat guy needs heart surgery.

    • I’m the exact opposite when it comes to the junk foods I crave the most. I could probably live without sweets forever, but put a huge plate of BBQ and french fries in front of me and I’ll eat every bite and ask for more.
