Rode Soldiers Creek yesterday on flats; Want a FREE tub of BCAA+ powder?
Yesterday I decided to head over to Soldiers Creek to try out my new Azonic 420 platform pedals. It’s been many months since I’ve hit up Soldiers Creek, and so I was pretty excited.
First, about the pedals. The 420s are excellent platform pedals; my FiveTen Impact shoes stayed firmly in place most of the time (see next paragraph) and they felt solid and comfortable. I’m really happy with how the pedals performed. These flats are going to be perfect for those times when being clipped in is not advisable (skinny practice, manual/wheelie practice, some freeride/downhill stuff, etc.)
All that said, I really missed being clipped in while I was riding yesterday. The loss of power compared to riding clipped in (especially climbing) was very noticeable. Also–and perhaps this is a bad habit I’ve developed from riding clipless–my feet did pop off the pedals here and there, mostly when landing. I’ve become so used to having my feet literally attached to the pedals that I no longer give that aspect of my riding any thought.
There were one or two times when I did have to drop my foot yesterday (and I probably would have fallen if I’d been clipped in), but apart from that I think riding clipless at Soldiers would be the best choice.
Now, about the trail itself. It’s been about nine months since I’ve been to Soldiers Creek and, unfortunately, the trail was not in great shape yesterday. We’ve had a lot of rain lately, and normally this is a good thing because it helps with the sandy areas. I guess the trails at Soldiers have received a little too much rain, because there was some pretty deep mud in several places, and even some standing water. Also, several bridges are in bad shape (one is straight up dangerous), and the ladder leading up to the big log ride only has like 3 planks left and is not climbable.
I shot some GoPro HD video yesterday, but I stupidly forgot to erase the footage I shot at Mt. Dora last week and so my SD card filled up after just one lap. The first lap (the one that recorded) was just a warm-up lap, and not very exciting. I was bummed when I saw the rest of the footage didn’t record, because I hit some pretty cool stuff after the warm-up lap.
