Weights yesterday, ride today; Skills practice going well.

I’d planned to ride yesterday morning, but I was running behind and then got slammed with work. I decided to take the morning off from training, and then in the afternoon I did my chest/delts/triceps workout. Now that I’m not doing much isolation work, this workout goes much faster than it once did. The chest/delts/triceps workout I’ve been doing for the past month or so involves bench press, incline bench press, weighted chest dips and push presses. If you missed my September 29, 2011 blog it discusses the push press and why it’s such a great exercise for explosiveness and power.

Those crazy North Shore riders!

As I mentioned in my September 30, 2011 blog, improving my balance and overall core skills on my mountain bike is something I’ve decided to focus on. I spend about 30 minutes each day working on core skills, and even after less than 2 weeks of this I’m seeing some nice improvements.

What I’ve been doing is laying the (3) 8-foot 1×6 boards (which are 5.5″ wide) in a line on the sidewalk. I’ll ride the 24-foot long skinnies, practice a track stand, do a sharp turn, ride the boards again and then accelerate and hit a flat 90 degree corner as fast as I can. When I first started practicing riding the skinnies I was absolutely terrible: I managed to ride the entire 24′ just 3 times out of about 50 tries. Now I’d say my success rate is more like 40%, and so far my record is 3 times in a row. So, I still suck–but at least now I feel like there’s hope. 🙂

I won’t raise the skinnies into the air until I can ride them perfectly on the ground “101 out of 100 times”.

I mentioned earlier this week that I was planning to take a vacation next week, but based on some early weather predictions I may just wait another week or so. I really don’t want to take this vacation (which I’m taking so I can mountain bike more or less non-stop) while it’s this hot. I’ll make my final decision on Friday.

I’m off to hit the trails, can’t wait!
