Ever have those days when you can’t get motivated to do anything? That was my day yesterday–and I’m not just talking about physical activity.

I was planning to ride yesterday morning, but I just didn’t feel like it and blew it off. Then I had to force myself to get my work done, and the only way I could do it was to keep reminding myself that if I didn’t buckle down I’d have to work over the weekend. My brain felt like it was stuck in first gear all day long, and I allowed all kinds of distractions to prolong my work day.

I thought about doing a weight training working out in the afternoon, but I simply didn’t feel like it. There are times when I would have forced myself to do the workout anyway (cutting, bulking or in training for an event), but I decided to give myself a pass yesterday.

I did manage to get outside over my lunch break and get in a core mountain biking skills practice session. I had some nice success there, and doubled my previous record of sequential successful rides across the 24′ long skinnies: my personal record now stands at six times in a row, and I also managed five in a row two different times. I’m definitely improving, but my consistency is still not where it needs to be. For example, right after doing six perfect runs in a row, I botched the next two runs.

What’s the prevailing thought on riding skinnies off the saddle vs. sitting? I’ve tried both methods extensively, and I seem to have better results when I’m on the saddle. I also like to be in a slightly harder gear than I would use if I were simply riding along; the bit of extra resistance seems to give me more control.

Anyway, yesterday after I finally finished my work I poured a glass of red wine, went up to the theater and blasted some of the loudest, most bass-intense music I could find. That helped. I resisted the initial urge to grill burgers for dinner, and instead ate a healthy grilled chicken soft taco made with lots of veggies, hot peppers from the garden and a whole grain tortilla.

This morning I’m feeling much more like myself, and it’s a good thing because I made up my mind last night that I’m mountain biking at least 30 miles this morning no matter what. Off to do that now, actually. 🙂
