Want to lose fat? Some tips on how to set yourself up for victory. Extreme self-discipline is within us all.

I’ve decided to take a week off from weight training during the week between Christmas and New Year’s (Monday, December 26, 2011 through Sunday, January 1, 2012). That week will be the perfect time to give my muscles and my CNS (Central Nervous System) a break, because on Monday, January 2, 2012 my 10 week cut will begin. During my cut there will be no breaks, no cheat meals, no missed workouts and some of… [Read more]

Back to post-holiday clean diet (and loving it). This morning's delecious breakfast!

You know that feeling you have when you return home after a vacation? No matter where you go or how much fun you have it’s always nice to come back to familiar comforts. That’s sort of how I felt yesterday getting back to my usual healthy diet after a few days of indulgence. I really enjoyed all the traditional Thanksgiving foods, but most of those foods are so “heavy” that it really has an impact… [Read more]

I’ve lost a step or two over the past few weeks. Bike on a Trail for November 27, 2011. Notice the sharp stumps that line the muddy trail. Not an advisable place to fall.

Over the past three or four weeks my resting heart rate has gone up three beats per minute (from 39 to 42), and that’s affected my VO2 MAX and my Heart Rate Reserve. My Heart Rate Recovery has also risen slightly. I posted these stats in yesterday’s weekly progress report, but here are my most current cardio stats again (as measured by the Heart Rate Monitor). For more information on these statistics, please check out… [Read more]

Week #33 of my 2011 maintenance program is complete, and itโ€™s time for my weekly progress report. My goal is to complete 2011 without ever rising above 10% body fat. My scale weight this morning (as measured by the ) is 183.6 pounds. That’s a 0.8 pound gain since last week’s weight of 182.8 pounds, and a 10 pound gain from my end-of-cut weight of 173.6 pounds. My 7-point body fat reading this morning is… [Read more]

Riding this morning; Amazon holiday shopping. Please help support JSF!

We sent our family home with many of the Thanksgiving leftovers, but we saved enough for one more big meal last night. I think I ate more for dinner last night than I ate on Thanksgiving day! All the sides are now gone, and I think there’s enough turkey breast left for a couple of sandwiches. I’m going to hit the trails this morning and work on burning some of the excess calories I’ve been… [Read more]

Short post-Thanksgiving blog… This is me.

I hope everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving had a fun and safe day! We all had a lot of fun, and (almost) everything came out really well. Somehow I completely spaced and forgot to make the roasted garlic mashed potatoes. ๐Ÿ™ We all sat down and Lisa said, “Something is missing…” Yep, something was definitely missing! Those mashed potatoes are one of the perennial favorite Thanksgiving dishes I make, and I have no idea how I… [Read more]

Happy Thanksgiving! Thoughts about health and happiness. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I love getting together with my family, cooking for (and with) them, sharing a wonderful meal and–most of all–taking a day to give thanks for my many blessings. I’m truly grateful for all the wonderful people I’ve come to know (online and in real life) through this web site and the forums. Thank you all for being part of my life. Of all the things I have to… [Read more]

Competition is good, and no–everyone should not get to win. "OK, now let some of the others have a turn in the lead!"

This morning I was reading the December 2011 issue of , and an article titled “7 Reasons Why Racing will Always Remain Relevant” penned by Vernon Felton really struck a chord with me. I thought the brief article was good, but point number two touched upon something that I feel strongly about: “Racing is honest. We live in a Tee Ball-playing, everyone-wins culture which, let’s be candid, is a load of crap. Walk into a… [Read more]

Ribs are back to 100%: Great leg workout yesterday!

I worked my legs last Monday, but it was a pretty light workout and I was still feeling a little rib pain. Yesterday I went full bore, and there was no pain at all. Well, that’s not exactly accurate: there was no rib pain–my legs were on fire. With my cut coming up in just over a month, I’ve decided to shift all my weight training exclusively to low rep compound exercises using very heavy… [Read more]

I spent all weekend working outside. Part of the backyard pond after a weekend of work.

I didn’t do any bike riding this past weekend, but I sure got plenty of exercise. I finally got out back and tackled all the pre-winter landscaping chores that I’ve been sort of dreading for the past few weeks… Day one involved lots of weeding in the main gardens around the pond, the butterfly garden and the beds that line the fence. There was also a tremendous amount of trimming and pruning that needed to… [Read more]
