Well, I hope not.

As the day wore on yesterday the pain in my ribs became increasingly noticeable. Despite the annoying pain, I decided that I should at least make an attempt at my leg workout. Unfortunately I found every exercise I tried caused the pain in my ribs to go from moderate to excruciating. After 15 minutes of trying various exercises and different weights, I realized that getting a leg workout in just wasn’t going to happen. 🙁

I can’t say I’m surprised. Usually after an injury the pain becomes worse for a day or two–just like DOMS in the days following a workout.

I’m a side sleeper, and last night I was unable to turn onto my left side. In fact, I woke up several times throughout the night because I tried to turn over in my sleep and the pain caused me to wake up.

So this morning I’m a little groggy, and my ribs are still extremely tender. I am breathing normally, but if I try to take a very deep breath there is a fair amount of pain as my lungs fill with air. I have noticed that I’m coughing a bit more than usual (and that’s pretty painful, too). Hopefully that’s not related to the rib injury, but I have to consider that it may be.

I suspect over the next couple of days things will start to improve. If they don’t I will probably go see my doctor to make sure I don’t have a rib sticking out somewhere in there.

I’m going to get a mild ride in this morning, sticking close to my neighborhood. I can’t do anything that causes me to breathe hard, so this ride will mostly be an excuse to get off my butt and do something. I really can’t stand sitting around all day. I’ll probably get in a 10 mile road road and then do some light skills work (skinny riding) in the driveway.

I’m still taking the NSAID “Mobic” that my doctor prescribed a couple months ago for the flank pain I was experiencing, but it doesn’t seem to be helping the rib pain. Or maybe it is, and I just have no way of knowing it because I take it every day.

I’m going to go get that ride in while it’s still fairly cool outside. Hopefully by tomorrow I’ll have some positive improvement to report!

    • Good idea. I have cracked three in my life, but they do not usually x-ray unless they suspect punture or more severe damage. There is really no treatment for a cracked rib in most cases.

      If they are cracked, I hope your healing experience is better than mine. I experienced 6 weeks of pain with little improvement over that time. Then it just disappeared. Best of luck.

  1. Hey guys, thanks for the concern. I just got back from the doctor. They did three x-rays and good news: no obvious breaks!

    My doctor said I was dealing with severe busing and possible cartage damage and prescribed some pain meds. She said no lifting or riding for two weeks, and if I ignore that advice I will prolong the recovery. 🙁

    I’m so happy nothing is broken. This could have been months instead of weeks.
