I wanted to follow yesterday’s blog with a little more information that may be helpful to those looking to make healthy eating more enjoyable.

One of the cooking tools that I find indispensable is my grill. Grilled food tastes incredible, and when your food tastes great it’s much easier to eat healthy.

A question about grilling that I’ve been asked many times over the years is “Propane or charcoal?” I’ve owned both types of grill, and for me there is no contest, it’s propane all the way. When I owned a charcoal grill I found it to be time-consuming, expensive, messy and just an overall pain to use, and so I rarely used it. If you’ve ever owned a charcoal grill, you know what I’m talking about.

Once I invested in a propane grill I started using it all the time (like 4 or 5 times per week, sometimes even more). The convenience of having your grill ready to go with the twist of a couple knobs and a button push will making grilling a joy. I use my grill far more than I use my oven. I’m out there all the time, sometimes twice in the same day.

I also feel the “nothing beats charcoal” argument to be mostly dogma: “If propane is easier to use than charcoal well then how can it be better?” Give me a break. Personally I far prefer the taste of food prepared on a propane grill because it’s much cleaner burning compared to lighter fluid soaked charcoal.

Finally, while charcoal grills can be made hot enough to get a nice char on steaks (especially high quality charcoal grills), getting a perfect char on a propane grill is much, much easier.

I’ve been using the same Weber Genesis propane grill for 7 or 8 years now, and I highly recommend it. These grills are easy to assemble, easy to use, cook very evenly and they are built tough.

So, what do you do if you don’t have outdoor space for a grill, can’t afford one and/or have to deal with harsh winters? That’s easy: get a George Foreman Grill. George Foreman electric grills are awesome. Almost every bodybuilder and fitness enthusiast I know owns one. They are inexpensive, easy to use, easy to clean and allow you to have that great grilled taste without ever leaving your kitchen.

Eating clean and healthy doesn’t have to mean bland and boring. If you are sick and tired of eating the same old stuff day after day then you’re setting yourself up to fail. The worst part is you’re gagging down your meals when you could be enjoying foods that are just as healthy but taste great!

Hopefully my last couple blogs have you thinking about ways you can make some very easy and inexpensive changes that will make healthy eating something you enjoy.

  1. Charcoal vs. Propane? I need both. For everyday grilling the convenience of a gas grill can’t be beat. However, for a steak most gas grills just can’t get hot enough for the perfect seer. For instance Ruth’s Chris steak house seers their steaks at 1800 degrees. (they also smother them in butter, but that’s a different issue.) I do agree that if I had to choose one it would be the gas but I wouldn’t want to be without my Weber Kettle grill either.

  2. I like propane as well, but use charcoal for some things where I just like it better.

    However, I suggest you never use anything but natural lump charcoal and something like a chimney starter. No need for lighter fluid or those compressed “briquettes” that contain lots of stuff other than wood.
