Happy New Year everyone!!!
I’m back from my vacation, and very fired up about the new year! I wish I could say my vacation was a lot of fun, but it didn’t turn out the way I’d hoped…
Everything got off to a great start. We had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends and really enjoyed the long weekend. On Tuesday morning I woke up feeling pretty sick, and for the rest of the week I battled some sort of stomach virus. I wasn’t puking or anything like that, but my stomach felt like it was tied into knots, and I felt extremely run down and tired. I pretty much spent Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in bed sleeping and watching TV. It was killing me, too, because the weather was outstanding and I really wanted to ride.
On Friday I started to feel somewhat better, but I could tell I was still fighting the virus off. Even this morning I’m still not 100%. 🙁
Hey, it could have been worse: getting sick on the middle of my cut would have killed my momentum.
I’ve decided to delay my 2012 cut by one week so that my body can fully recover. Jumping into a caloric deficit combined with hard training 7 days per week while my body is not at 100% would be a recipe for disaster. So my 2012 cut will start on Monday January 9, 2012.
It’s pretty lame that after a year of eating very clean my awesome splurge week was a no-go. I mean, I thought I was going to spend last week enjoying all the decadent foods I’ll be missing while I’m cutting, and instead I mostly had stuff like soup. I reached my goal of maintaining less than 10% body fat in 2011, so I’m going to go nuts this coming week. I wouldn’t be surprised if I put on 5 pounds over the next week. 😀
There is another possible change to this year’s cut….
My original plan was to cut for exactly 10 weeks. The reason for the fixed amount of time is because I was planning to attend a mountain biking skills camp in mid-March with my brother, and I wanted to have my cut over and done with by then. Well, my brother broke his collar bone in a mountain biking accident and he just had surgery a couple of days ago. He’s probably looking at two months off the bike. He may also be dealing with some nerve damage, and that will further delay his recovery. There are several other external factors outside of our control that, combined with my brother’s injury, are making the mtb skills camp less and less likely for March.
If it turns out that the trip doesn’t happen in March, I may extend my cut a little longer (if required). I may even cut all the way down to a feathery 160 pounds. We’ll see.
