New quads/hamstring photo; Bruises; Lisa still sick, I’m still not. Quads and hamstrings are starting to cut up nicely. Notice the big bruise on my quad? That was from a hard mountain biking fall over the weekend onto some big, wet roots.

Over the past week I’ve noticed dramatically increased cuts in my legs, arms and abs. The vascularity in my arms has also become significantly more pronounced as I’ve dropped into the 6% body fat range. I snapped the picture to the right this morning. My low body fat level is allowing some of that hard work in the weight room to show through. Of course aesthetics are a distant second to the main reason I’m… [Read more]

Destroying strength PRs at just 178 pounds, and I can’t explain how. 45 pound plate

The final workout of last week (Friday’s back/biceps/abs workout) was a good one, but I was feeling weak for the very first time this year. As I stated in Saturday’s blog, I decided that I wasn’t going to read too much into a single day where I was feeling sub-optimal. On Saturday morning I was still feeling a less than 100%, but I still managed to break my personal record on the timed opening 3… [Read more]

New stem, new PR; Challenging bunny hop; Bent wheels; Lisa very sick. The Thompson 110mm/10° stem made a big comfort and performance difference!

I have quite a few different subjects to cover this morning, and a busy day ahead. Let’s dive right in! First I want to talk about Saturday’s cardio. I was feeling a little off again on Saturday (more on that further down), but I wanted to get out on the trails and test my new Thompson stem. When I rebuilt my Trek Fuel EX 8 a week ago (story here, pictures here) I originally wanted… [Read more]

2012 cut weekly progress report: Week #7. EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale

Week #7 of my 2012 cutting program is complete, and it’s time to check my progress and make any necessary adjustments to my diet and training. NOTE: If you’re trying to lose fat or gain muscle it’s absolutely critical that you check your progress–and not just with a bathroom scale. I recommend that once every week you check your scale weight, your body fat percentage (using a caliper, not an inaccurate Bioelectrical Impedance scale) and… [Read more]

Felt some weakness yesterday; Replacement stem arriving today.

For the very first time of my 2012 cut I lacked energy for yesterday’s workout (back/biceps/abs). I decided to train earlier than normal yesterday, and it’s quite possible that the early training time may have contributed to my lack of energy (I only had one meal in me). I fought through the weakness, and I still managed to add weight and/or reps to every single exercise for the seventh straight week. I still don’t know… [Read more]

Thoughts on my upgraded Fuel after first ride. She ran like a dream!

Yesterday I took my Fuel EX 8 with all the newly upgraded parts (lots of pictures and details in yesterday’s blog) out for her first real ride. Today I’m going to post some detailed thoughts about the upgrades and yesterday’s ride. I’ll start off by saying that many of the tasks I had to perform to install these upgrades were new to me. Essentially my entire bike was stripped down and rebuilt–everything from the bottom… [Read more]

Mostly pictures today: Trek Fuel EX 8 upgraded with SRAM XO Parts. XO Carbon Goodness!

Today’s blog is mostly pictures. 🙂 With the exception of the SRAM 1070 11-36 cassette, all the XO gear arrived yesterday. The cassette was accidentally left out of the shipment, but it will be arriving this morning. I used my old cassette as a placeholder yesterday while I installed all the new equipment. Everything went very smoothly, and as of this morning I just need to fine tune the front and rear derailleurs a little… [Read more]

Excellent chicken seasoning; Working out early today: XO gear to arrive! McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Chicken Seasoning

In addition to the many hot sauces that I use to keep my cutting diet interesting, I also like to use different seasonings on my chicken breasts before tossing them on the grill. Dry seasonings are a fantastic zero calorie method of making boring old chicken breasts fresh and exciting. The last time my mom came for a visit she turned me on to a great dry spice mix called . Despite the name (I… [Read more]

Strongest since 2010; Almost knocked myself out; Articles section launched. It doesn't look like much here, but the socket hit right on the bone doing about 200 miles per hour.

After waking up yesterday morning at 3:00 AM to see Lisa off to Vegas, I was feeling a little tired at training time. That lethargic feeling didn’t last long once I started lifting–in fact I felt really good after just a couple of sets. For the seventh leg workout in a row I added weight and/or reps to every single exercise–and that included +10 pounds to my squat and +10 pounds to my lunges. I… [Read more]
